Obituary of Walter Joseph Grady
The family of Walter Joseph Grady, former resident of St. Francis Harbour, Guysborough Co., is saddened to announce his passing on Tuesday, December 31, 2024, at the age of 70.
Walt graduated from Guysborough Memorial High School in June, 1972. His postsecondary education was achieved through Canso Regional Vocational School.
Upon graduating with top marks in Electronics - Navigational Aids, he began a long and distinguished career with Bell Canada as a Central Office Technician, where he was highly respected and relied upon 24/7 as the "go to guy" and problem fixer for large parts of Guysborough County and Western Cape Breton.
An avid sportsman, he loved playing hockey (shinny) in his younger years with his four brothers and softball during the summer months. He engaged in every type of fishing from fly fishing, ice and angling to tending nets in the open ocean. Curling, swimming and archery were other areas where he excelled. He was also a proud member of the Seven Communities Volunteer Fire Fighters for a number of years. Walt had an amazing sense of humour and was always active to ensure peace and harmony thrived among those with whom he was around. It was an amazing gift.
Perhaps his greatest attribute was love of immediate family and the old homestead. As brothers and sisters began moving away, Walt stayed behind to care for the land and his aging parents; keeping the fields mowed, cutting and stowing firewood for the winter, tending to cattle and maintaining the dozens of acres of land.
Always willing to help others, it would be difficult to find a more loving and kind individual. He will always be remembered as a wonderful human being. It is difficult to forget someone who gave so much to remember.
Walt is survived by sisters, Annie (Jim) Peters; Florence (Jim) Brown; Pat (Gary) Colter; Darlene (David) Langille; brothers, Dan (Gloria) Grady; Alex (Donna) Grady and Ron (Wanda) Grady. He was predeceased by his parents, Lewis Alexander and Annie Catherine Grady and older brother, Bill Grady and Bill's wife Oonagh.
Visitation will be Sunday, January 5, 2025, from 4-8 p.m. in Dennis Haverstock Funeral Home, 54 Queen St., Guysborough. Funeral mass will be 11 a.m. Monday, January 6 from St. Francis of Assisi Roman Catholic Church, St. Francis Harbour with Father Allan MacPhie officiating. Burial in the parish cemetery in the spring.
