I was deeply saddened to hear recently of Ethel's illness and then her death. What a wonderful lady! Ethel helped me greatly with research into my ancestors from the Estmere area through her stories and referrals to others who could tell me more. She gave me the gift of a cake plate that had belonged to one of my great-aunts. Whenever my husband and I would drop by, she would fill us up with stories, cups of tea and savoury oatcakes. She showed such pride in her daughters Lynn and Lisa and looked forward to their visits. My husband Iain joins me in sending thoughts and prayers to Lynn, Lisa, Betty, Georgena and family members we have heard of but have not met. Lois and Iain

My deepest condolences to Lynn, Lisa and Ethel’s family on the loss of a wonderful and caring mom and sister.
Ethel was one of the first people I met when I moved to Cape Breton and she treated me with great kindness. I felt like I had known her for many years. She always took interest in what I was doing and would share some of her memories of Cape Breton with me. Anytime I would see Ethel she would have tea and treats ready to share and made me feel so welcomed in her home. Lynn and Lisa are blessed with the same kindness.
I am so saddened by Ethel’s passing but she had a deep impact on everyone who knew her, she will live on in our memories always. I’m sure she is smiling down on us now and so pleased.. I can hear Ethel’s reply “Don’t I Know it” God please Ethel, rest in peace.

So sorry for your loss. The first time I met Ethel, was going down for the day with my husband Steve, as he was going down hunting with Jonny. Once there, I was invited to work with Lynn and Lisa at the local bake sale. Ethel and her girls quickly got me right in there to help out. She was such a kind lady and afterwards insisted we stay for supper before heading home. Lynn & Lisa, may you get peace knowing your mother was such a beautiful soul ♥️

Sending you my sincere condolences on the passing of your mother.
Your Mom was a fixture in my family for as long as I can remember and a dear friend of my mother. When I was a young boy maybe 8 or 10 years old I can remember Ethel and her sisters coming to visit at my home and taking the time to play with me.
As a teenager I recall one summer when my father arranged to have me help your father (Lewis) with hay making. Part of the deal was for me to use my Dad's tractor to cut the hay and use our wagon to haul it to the barn. I enjoyed those days and remember your Mom making sure that there was a good lunch and yes dinner waiting when the days work was finished.
In later years you girls can probably remember your Mom visiting my mother in Whycocomagh many times. More importantly the time they spent together during my mother's final days in the Baddeck Hospital. I could never thank your Mom enough for what she for my Mom during that time.
Rest assured that they are probably sitting down as you read this having a conversation over a cup of tea.
Sincere regards
Rannie and Margie Ann MacDonald
Your Mom and Dad were great people and did so much to help their friends and neighbors.

I am so sorry to hear of Ethel’s passing! I remember Ethel as always unfailingly cheerful and willing to help out whenever and wherever help was needed. She was very good to our family, taking my aunts to their appointments and taking them shopping when they were no longer able to take themselves. She was the truest of friends.
In deepest sympathy,
Janet Cameron

When we moved here from Ontario 12 years ago, you were one of the first people we met. Soon we became friends, stopping to catch up when we ran into each other in town. You loved attending the local Ceilidhs, where you encouraged my husband Don (Bumper) to play his guitar and sing some of your favourite tunes, and I was glad to have your company.
You were such a kind and caring woman, that even my cat (who is afraid of everyone) would come and sit at your feet when you stopped in to visit. I guess it’s true what they say about animals being a great judge of a person’s character.
I remember one time when I called to see how you were getting along during the tail end of a hurricane; Lisa answered and said that although she was wide-awake listening to the bricks fall down the chimney, you had simply gone to bed. Clearly, it was NOT the first major storm that you had weathered.
We made a point of checking in on each other when the weather was bad or the power went out. For me, it was like having a new mom and I will miss you dearly.
Ethel, God speed, and rest in peace, your cheery “Hellooo” will sound in my ears forever....

Our sincere condolences, Lisa and Lynn, on the passing of your mother.
Ethel was my grade 7 teacher. Her firm but fair approach to teaching was one that I modelled my own teaching career on.
Each summer I always made it a point to visit Ethel at her home on Portage Road upon my return to Cape Breton. Ethel's zest for life and joyous spirit would brighten anyone's day - always insisting that you have a bite to eat and a cup of tea/coffee before you leave.
The memories of these visits and chance meetings at the Co-op parking lot/store with Ethel will be treasured always.
May the great memories you have had over the years with your Mom, comfort you at this difficult time,
Allan, Doreen and Jen MacCalder

Dear girls. I have never met you but often discussed you with your wonderful mom.
She was very orderly in class but once we stepped outside she was an incredible barrel of fun.
Often thought of the incredible soul and always looked forward to another visit but being so far away in Vancouver BC it was not meant to be.
When my sister died suddenly both your dear mom and her fantastic parents were such incredible sources of comfort and the closeness of relationships came through.
My special condolences to all.
May The Lord bless you richly.
The last visit we had was at Isobel Mac Donald's wake in Blues Mills. Her warm hug was such a comfort and a visit as if we had seen each other the day before rather than 30 years before. That was just how the dear soul was.
This obituary disappoints me greatly.
Love to all.

Dearest Aunt Ethel,
The world has lost an extraordinary soul and remarkable woman. You were a beacon of warmth, kindness, and unwavering strength. I suppose part of me believed you would always be here—a steadfast presence in my life, a towering pillar of optimism that nothing could shake. Your passing marks the end of an era, one that will be deeply mourned.
From the moment we met, you welcomed me into your home and made me feel as though I had always belonged, as if I had always been a part of your world. Your home was a sanctuary, filled with laughter and love. But it wasn’t just me—you had a way of making everyone feel like they mattered, like they were special. Your love knew no bounds, and neither did your capacity to bring joy to those around you.
It’s funny how life is full of contrasts. When I meet your former students, they often share stories of a different Ethel—a strict, no-nonsense schoolteacher who commanded respect and discipline. And yet, this too was a testament to your greatness. You knew when to be firm and when to let your hair down. You were a multifaceted woman, and you navigated each role with grace and wisdom.
Charlie, my father-in-law, captured your spirit perfectly. “Ethel could drop her favorite teacup and laugh about it,” he would say, and it’s true. You had an extraordinary ability to find humor in the smallest mishaps, to laugh at life’s little accidents rather than fret over them.
That’s how I imagine you now—up in heaven, alongside Grandma and Grampie Lewis, Uncle Lewis, Uncle John D, Dallas, and Charlie, causing delightful mischief and making the angels laugh. I will never forget the stories Charlie used to tell—the one about you and Lewis walking hand in hand down the road from the homestead, while he, ever the prankster, hid in a tree just to jump out and spoil the romance. Those were days filled with youthful innocence and endless laughter. And that’s how I will always remember you, Aunt Ethel—bringing light, laughter, and love into every corner of life, all while looking fabulous.
I will miss your visits, your phone calls during power outages and storms just to check in on me, to make sure I was okay. I will miss your beautiful soul, your contagious laughter, and the comfort of knowing you were just a call away. Life will never be the same without you, but I take solace in the countless memories you’ve left behind and in the certainty that your spirit lives on in all of us who were lucky enough to know you.
Rest in peace, Great Aunt Ethel. Your legacy of love and laughter will forever be cherished.
