Johnston, David Ward - Port Hawkesbury, Age 83. Passed away at home on Tuesday, January 10, 2023. David was born in St. Stephen, NB on May 7, 1939 to the late Linwood and Susan (Ward) Johnston (Scottish and Irish/English descent). David graduated from Minto Memorial High School in 1957 where he was a top student and played on the high school basketball team for three years.
He attended the University of New Brunswick School of Engineering and graduated in 1962 with a BSc in Chemical Engineering.
David and Mary (Dufour) were married on September 21, 1960 and moved to Port Hawkesbury, NS in 1962 where David was employed with Stora in the Pulp and Paper Industry.
David was very involved with youth starting with the Boy Scouts, being a Scoutmaster in both New Brunswick and Nova Scotia. He also coached basketball at the high School and Junior high school level and was recognized with a provincial award for coaching for over fifty years. David was also active in his community and in his church and was a member of the local Lions Club for many years. David’s leisure pastimes were golf and bird watching. He spent many hours in the outdoors and was always willing to help others enjoy his love of birds and nature.
David is survived by his wife Mary (Dufour); sons, Brian (Liz), Warren (Sandra), Port Hastings; Paul (Annette), Halifax; brother, Glenn, Fredericton; grandchildren, Coleman, Michael (Rachel), William, Sara (Willie), Grace and Katherine; brothers-in-law, Archie and Lee, Clarks Corner, NB and several nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, David was predeceased by his sister, Patricia.
Thanks to Dr. Collins for his continuing and excellent care, Dr. McCormack and the oncology clinic at St. Martha’s Regional Hospital for their compassionate care.
Visitation will be held from 4-8 p.m. on Friday, January 13, in Dennis Haverstock Funeral Home, Port Hawkesbury. Funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, January 14 in Holy Trinity Anglican Church, Port Hawkesbury with Rev. Susan Slater officiating. Family flowers only please.
Memorial donations may be made to Holy Trinity Anglican Church, Port Hawkesbury. Burial to follow in the church cemetery.
