To my aunt Mary, Brian, Warren and Paul. I'd like to extend condolences for David's passing. He clearly had a very eclectic and full life with a connection to the family and lots of interesting hobbies over the years. For me personally I have found memories talking baseball and the rivalry b/t the American and National leagues. He was my introduction to jazz music and to listening more carefully to the birds.
best wishes,
Aaron Dell Johnston

There weren’t many dads who were always in the stands - but in my memory Dave never missed a game - either from the stands or behind the bench.
He was a heck of a fan and seemed a wonderful dad and was a great coach.
Having walked a few of those paths myself - at times perhaps not as gracefully as Dave - I appreciate even more now the awesome weight of those titles.
As an adult there are few things I can be called that I like more than ‘coach’. It’s the best job I know for all the best reasons.
Goodbye, Coach. Rest easy.

Dave and Mary showed incredible generosity to my mom and me during a very difficut time, and for that I will be forever grateful. Looking back I'd say that the time spent around Dave influenced my interest in many things: jazz music, gardening, nice stereo equipment, bird watching, single malt, sports (even though we didn't exactly cheer for the same teams in any sport.) He let us
play basketball and hockey in his driveway ("watch the car") and stickball in the back field ("watch the garden"). Lots of good times.
My condolences to the family.
Charles

I first Dave while refereeing bball games at SAERC. What a great coach and gentleman. Yes, he would ask about a call every now and then which is fine. He was always respectful of everyone involved in the game - players, fans, refs... on and on. What a treat to deal with him. Through the years we would bump into each other at games and have a wonderful catch-up chat. I truly enjoyed all of my experiences with this wonderful person. Peace and love to his family and friends. Ed McHugh, Bedford, NS

Sincere Condolences to Mary, Warren, Sandra, Sara the entire Johnston family and his many colleagues and friends in the Strait Area. While we were at 5 Brown Street from 1991 to 2006, it was a privilege to enjoy so many pleasant interactions with this prince of a man and human being whenever he was visiting Warren and family across the street. David is fondly and kindly remembered, and sadly missed, even as we miss those earlier years "on the hill" in our corner of Port Hastings overlooking the Strait and Causeway.
Love, Dave, Barb (Meghan & Emma)!

Sincere condolences to Mary, Brian, Warren, Paul and immediate family on Dave’s passing.
Coach (Graves) would ensure the boys would ‘show some class’ while arriving at our away games adorned in team sweaters and team jackets. It was just one of many traits that he tried to instill on the lads along with of course the teachings of the game itself to many.
I will fill the feeders up this weekend, put on some Dizzy Gillespie, glass of wine and wonder why we never knew Dave’s middle name was Ward. We would have had fun with that.

So sorry to hear of Mr. Johnston’s passing. He was my scout master in Port Hawkesbury (late 60’s), hence the use of the formal name reference. I loved the floor hockey games - with a rubber ring and the scout staff we were all required to make. Games took place in the basement of the Anglican Church. What a life of service he gave to the community. We all lost a fine man. May your memories sustain you in this time of loss. His life of service is certainly one to celebrate. All the best.

To Mary and the Johnston family -
I am saddened to hear of Dave's passing; I send condolences. Dave was a big influence on me and I learned much from him. He made a positive contribution to many, many young people over his storied career as a basketball coach, with an impact that went far beyond the court, and lived long past one's time playing basketball.
Without a doubt, his number one teaching was to have class, to always have class. Thank you, Dave for that invaluable lesson!

Take care.
