It is with deep sorrow that I write a few words in memory of Hilda. Given that her sons and I have been lifelong schoolmates, classmates, and friends, and that her daughters tolerated my presence, kitchen chats in Steep Creek with Hilda and Millard were not infrequent in the day. Hilda and Millard's home had an open door, and one was always welcomed in. If by chance one of the boys wasn't immediately at hand when you dropped in, Millard and Hilda would pull out a kitchen chair and welcome you at their table. This was not an infrequent occurrence in the many years of friendship with her sons. It was also not unheard of for Hilda to take a twirl or two with Millard in her kitchen when the proper tune could be heard in the air. Hilda leaves many memories with those who knew her. She and Millard were blessed with a devoted family who merely reflected the love and service with which they were raised. One seldom spoke her name alone, as it always seemed to be "Millard and Hilda" who one spoke with, or who welcomed you into their home. She will be missed but as it is said, she is now reunited with Millard, her true dancing partner in life. It is an added sorrow that now one must mourn Hilda's passing at this time of pandemic.
