Obituary
Please share a memory of Sarah to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
White, Sarah Catherine "Kay" - Age 89, Port Hawkesbury. Passed away on Thursday, December 9, 2021 in the Port Hawkesbury Nursing Home. Born in Centennial, Inverness County, Kay was the youngest daughter of the late Alex T. and Annie Campbell, sharing the home with her 11 siblings.
Kay attended school in Judique, and later went on to pursue business studies in Sydney. Upon completion of her studies, Kay worked briefly in an agricultural office, and then went on to join the Nova Scotia Department of Transportation, where she worked for over 30 years until her retirement.
No discussion of Kay would be complete without mentioning the love of her life, Stephen "Roddie" White. Kay and Roddie were married shortly after Roddie completed his studies in the carpentry trade. They went on to make their home in Port Hawkesbury, where they shared many happy married years together.
Kay and Roddie loved to visit and play cards with friends in their home, and also loved to entertain family from Detroit, during their frequent summer trips to Cape Breton. Kay loved to share her cooking skills with all visitors, and no one left her home hungry. When they weren’t entertaining friends and family, Kay and Roddie enjoyed traveling, having made trips together to Detroit, Boston and Florida, among other places.
Kay had a contagious laugh, and loved to share her sense of humor with all those around her. Her laugh could frequently be heard at the Evergreen Club, where she enjoyed spending time during her later years, quilting, cooking, and visiting with her friends.
Kay’s faith was very important to her, and she was a devout member of St. Joseph Roman Catholic Church in Port Hawkesbury for many years.
Kay was a generous and kind woman who will be missed by many. Kay was predeceased by her husband, Stephen "Roddie" White; her parents Alex T. and Annie, brothers, John D., Dougall, Allan, Thomas and Steve, and sisters Sadie, Jessie and Peggy. She will be sadly missed by brother Ambrose (Kaye), Judique, and sisters Theresa (Mike) Braun, Grafton, Massachusetts, and Florence (Anselm) MacDonald, Mancelona, Michigan. In addition to the immediate family, Kay will always hold a special place in the hearts of her many nieces and nephews.
The family wishes to thank the caregivers and staff of both the Port Hawkesbury Nursing Home, and High Crest Nursing Home in Sherbrooke, for the kindness and care that they showed to Kay during her final years.
Visitation will take place Friday, December 10 from 1- 4 p.m. in Dennis Haverstock Funeral Home, 724 Granville St., Port Hawkesbury.
Funeral mass will be held at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, December 11 in St. Joseph Roman Catholic Church, Port Hawkesbury with Father Conrad Edwards officiating. Burial to follow in the parish cemetery.
