BEATON, Daniel Martin "Marty" – 66, Port Hawkesbury. After a long and courageous battle with cancer, Martin passed away peacefully with his loving family by his side in Strait Richmond Hospital, Evanston, on Friday, January 17, 2014. Martin was the son of the late Dan Angus and Catherine (MacLellan) Beaton of Blackstone, Inverness County. Having been predeceased by his loving wife of forty-two years, Joan (McNamara), he is survived by his sons, Tommy (Brenda), Port Hawkesbury; Jason (Aya) and Christopher (Rina), of Calgary; three grandchildren, Daniel and his mom, Trish MacLean; Alexis and Finley Beaton, all of Port Hawkesbury. Martin is also survived by brothers, Finley (fiancé Kay Chisholm), Antigonish; Angus (Marilyn), Bedford; Alexander, Stewartdale; Ambrose (Cathy), Eastern Passage; Kevin (Mary), Malcolm (Marguerite), Blackstone; and sisters, Teresa Schieck, Michigan; Marie (Ron) Martineau, Bruderheim, Alta; Marcella Phillips (Alex MacKinnon), Inverness; Margaret Hawley, Millville; Marian (Rannie) MacLellan, Long Point. He is also survived by parents-in-law, Mable and Frank Cambria, sisters-in-law, Lorraine (Celeste) and Margaret (Robert) Fitzpatrick, all of Boston, Mass.; as well as many nieces and nephews and close friends. He was predeceased by brothers-in-law, James Schieck, Clyde Phillips, Angus Hawley and sister-in-law, Rosalia Beaton. Martin was retired from STORA Paper Mill, Port Hawkesbury, and he will be remembered as a strong advocate for the cause of unionism and the rights of the working class. He was a long time member of CEP Local 972 and served in several positions on the Local executive and various committees. He was a strong supporter of the NDP party, was twice a provincial candidate for the Inverness South riding and worked as campaign manager for subsequent candidates in his riding. He was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 43 and enjoyed attending social activities with his friends there. His interests included: following hockey, particularly supporting his sons’ and grandchildren’s hockey programs; playing cards; four wheeling; attending ceilidhs; story-telling and joking. Martin was well known for his great sense of humour and quick wit which endeared him to all who knew him. He maintained his humour throughout his lengthy illness, even to the very end. Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be from 7-9 p.m. Tuesday and 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Wednesday with vigil service at 7 p.m. Wednesday all in Dennis Haverstock Funeral Home, Port Hawkesbury. Funeral mass will be 10 a.m. Thursday from St. Joseph Roman Catholic Church, Port Hawkesbury, with Father Conrad Edwards officiating. Burial in the parish cemetery.
