It is with deep sorrow we announce the peaceful passing of our dear Mother, Elsie Iowen Hadley 93, of Mulgrave on the evening of Tuesday, June 9, 2020, in the Milford Haven Home for Special Care, Guysborough. Born in Middle Melford on April 29, 1927, she was a daughter of the late Ellsworth Percival and Lillian Maude (Halfpenny) Lyle. Left to mourn are her daughters, Carolyn (George), West Bay Road; Beverly (Gregory), Yarmouth; Lorraine (Burton), Dartmouth; son, Roderick (JoAnn), Antigonish; sister, Eva Mae Roberts (Leonard), Bedford; cherished grandchildren, Heather, Glenn (Holly) Petrie and Julia (Ian) Petrie Skacel, Roderick (Jessie), Randy (Samantha) Bain and Lisa (Steve) Bain Corkum, Gregory (Jenna) and Lyle Hadley; 12 great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews. Mom was predeceased by her loving husband, Roderick Lauder Hadley; brothers, Martin Frederick "Bud" and Earl David Lyle. She was a faithful and active member of St. Andrew's Anglican Church, the A.C.W., Order of the Eastern Star Faith Chapter #54 and I.O.D.E. Her working career included Bell Canada Toronto and Maritime Tel & Tel. Mulgrave as a switchboard operator. She diligently served on Mulgrave Town Council as Ward 2 Councillor and a term as Deputy Mayor. Her Board activities included: Eastern Counties Regional Library, Guysborough County School Board and the Mulgrave Medical Center. Mom was also a long-time member of the Mulgrave Memory Lane Seniors Club. Tragically losing her father at age 17 and subsequently her husband at age 44, Mom persevered, providing for her siblings and children. Always independent, she took great pride in living in and maintaining her home at 453 Main St. Despite many obstacles, Mom provided a loving home and set the example of hard work on her family. With kindness and love, Mom lived her favourite saying, "It's better to give than to receive" We will miss her dearly. Cremation has taken place and no formal visitation by request. A Graveside Service will be held in St. Andrew's Anglican Cemetery, Mulgrave on Tuesday, June 16 at 1 p.m. with Rev. Susan Slater officiating. Donations in memory of Mom may be made to St. Andrew's Anglican Church.
