Obituary
Please share a memory of Arley to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
ASHE, Arley Spurgeon - Age 58, Monastery. Mr. Ashe died peacefully after a long and difficult battle with Amyloidosis on Wednesday, January 1, 2020, in the QEII Infirmary Site, Halifax. Born in Antigonish, he was the son of the late Pastor Norman Elms and the late Marion "Mamie" (Ashe) Elms of Monastery.
For the past twelve years he was employed as an Operations Technician with Nature's Way Canada in Dartmouth. He was previously employed as a General Manager in the hospitality industry for many years. He was a graduate of Antigonish East High School, Monastery and received his diploma in Business Hospitality and Management from NSCC, Dartmouth. He had a lifetime music affair with the R&B/Funk music culture of the 1970's, since he was a young teenager. Arley was a talented musician who played bass guitar for his personal enjoyment and as a side gig with different groups, most recently he played with a band from Preston and his presence is greatly missed.
He was an avid fan of music and he mastered playing a mean baseline. A few of his all-time favourite artists include his "main man" George Clinton of Parliament Bootsy Collins, Nile Rodgers, Bernard Edwards, George Benson and Louis Johnson. He was a modest, quiet and shy person who lived a simple and peaceful existence. He was a very well liked, friendly and respectful man who wanted to be remembered for being decent and fair to everyone he met.
He is survived by his brother, Randy Ashe, Monastery; sister, Marilyn Medley, Eastern Passage; two nephews, Sterling Medley, Halifax; Jason Ashe (Beth), Brampton, Ont.; great-niece, Mya Ashe, Brampton, Ont.; aunt, Helen Elms, Halifax; uncle, Russell Elms (Angela), Upper Big Tracadie; aunt, Laura Daye, Halifax; and many dearly loved and adored cousins. Although Arley had many friends and relatives that he truly loved and cared for, he wished to acknowledge three extra special people in his life whom he referred to and treated as his immediate family, Sinisa (Malica) Tizic; Timberlea; and Sonja Crawford, Monastery/Washington, DC. Besides his parents, Arley was predeceased by his brother, Thomas Ashe.
Quoting Arley, "Thank you for everything my brother, Sinisa and your beautiful wife, Malica. Thank you my dear Sonja, for being a wonderful support and confidante. You guys exceeded my expectations and I love you. Now, get some rest with your boys and don't worry about me!" Arley was deeply grateful to his cousin, Barry Daye (Upper Big Tracadie), Rev. Richard Adesola "Dr. Joke", Antigonish; the many doctors, nurses and medical professionals who provided him with care and comfort, his many friends and relatives who visited, called, texted and reached out to him on social media with words of encouragement and prayers. He says to tell everyone that he is "Okay, please don't worry". Arley will be remembered for being an example of love, faith, hope, courage and strength...and his beautiful smile.
Due to the winter conditions the visitation for today, Thursday has been cancelled and Arley will rest from 3-8 p.m. on Friday in Tracadie United Baptist Church, Monastery and from where a Celebration of Life will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday. Cremation will follow the funeral and a private family burial will be held at a later date in Sunnyview Cemetery. Flowers are welcome. Memorial donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society or to The Canadian Amyloidosis Support Network, Inc. (CASN).
Arley's final request to those celebrating his life, is for each person to do one good act of kindness and forgive someone. Arrangements are under the care and direction of Dennis Haverstock Funeral Home, Port Hawkesbury. Words of comfort may be forwarded to the family at: www.haverstocks.com
