Obituary of Derek Cyril Kevin Kruger

Please share a memory of Derek to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

KRUGER, Captain Derek Cyril Kevin – It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved father, Derek Kruger. Born in Halifax on February 1, 1946, Derek was the son of the late John and Patricia (Nelson) McGough and stepfather, Michael Kruger.

Dad’s marine career began at the early age of 16, where he was a seaman. In 1965 to 1970, dad enlisted in the U.S. Navy. About 1977, he earned his Certificate of Competency as Master of a 350-ton cargo ship. In 1990 dad earned the Canadian Certificate of Competency as Master Mariner, which he was proud of.

Dad loved a good cup of tea while story telling. When not working overseas or within Canada, dad would be found doing improvements to the property which he took pride in. Our father was an amazingly special person in our life, someone we could turn to for advice, understanding and support.

Our father is survived by his loving children, Christopher, Port Hastings; Monique Jackson (Fred), Queensport; Eddie (Dawn), Texas, USA; Kyle (Shannon), Saskatchewan; Krista, Port Hawkesbury; brother, Michael (Jean), Sydney. Derek is also survived by his grandchildren, Kim (Brady), Kristina (Elisha), Liam, Memory, Devin (Madison), Elissa, Layne, Gavin, Dylan, Logan and Allie; great-granddaughter, Esmay; as well as many nieces and nephews.

Derek was predeceased by the love of his life of 24 years, Rejeanne; brothers, Lee and David; son, Kevin and stepson, Kirk.

The family would like to thank the 13 different Ground Search and Rescue Teams, NS Conservation Officers, Department of Natural Resources and Renewables Air, Teeft K9 and the RCMP K9 units for their efforts.

Cremation has taken place. Funeral Service will be 11 a.m. on Saturday, May, 17, 2025 from Black River United Church with Rev. Carol Joy Shatford officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the family.

Dad will be deeply missed, but his love and legacy will remain in the hearts of all who knew him. Words of comfort may be forwarded to the family at www.haverstocks.com
