Obituary of John Joseph Herney
HERNEY, John Joseph - Age 79, passed away peacefully in the Kiknu Nursing Home on October 31, 2024. John was born March 30, 1945, in Sydney, Nova Scotia to the late Maggie (Paul) and Matthew Herney.
John was an Indian Residential School Survivor. As a young man, he made his way to Calgary, Alberta where he lived with his sons, Nicholas and Malcolm. John was a very hard working man and had many occupations: hard labour, cutting pulp, construction, farming, nickel mining, and security. He also worked for Mi’kmaq Family and Children’s Services as a driver, and also for Medical Services. John loved to collect antiques and records. His favourite hobby was singing karaoke for hours. He was a great man who would help anyone out - any time. John had a kind heart.
John is survived by his partner of 20 years, Dolena Poulette; children Nicholas Herney; Margo Turple, Tanya, Sean Clair and Naomi Pierrard (Ackery); siblings, Loppy Herney, Mary Agnes,’Toots’; Debbie Paul; Anne Marie Michael; and several grandchildren; nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was predeceased by his son, Malcolm; and his siblings, Matilda; Peter; Louis (O Boy); Roy; and Diana.
We would like to thank both Alderwood and Kiknu Nusing Homes for their continuous care for John. To the staff of Inverness Consolidated Memorial Hospital for their kindness and support. Also, to We’koqma’q Home Care for the special care they provided to John over the last 10 years.
Visitation will be from 2-5 p.m. on Wednesday, November 6 in Dennis Haverstock Funeral Home, Port Hawkesbury with a Memorial Service at 3 p.m. with Deacon Berkley Guthro. Cremation will follow with burial at a later date. Words of comfort may be forwarded to the family at www.haverstocks.com
