Obituary of Theresa Mombourquette
It is with heavy hearts that the family of Theresa Mombourquette announce her passing on October 25th 2024 at the Richmond Villa, NS. Beloved Aunt, Godmother, devoted friend, and cherished member of our community, she departed this life peacefully at the age of 102, a week shy of her 103rd birthday.
Theresa was predeceased by her husband of 48 years Herman who she missed dearly after his passing in 2005. He was her perfect match. Born on November 1st, 1921 in Lower L’Ardoise, NS, Theresa was the daughter of the late Benjamin and Virginia Birrette. She moved to Halifax in 1942 and worked at the VG Hospital and the Moirs Chocolate Factory. During her time in the city, she formed many cherished friendships and lasting
memories.
After marrying in 1957 she settled in Cape Breton, where she dedicated many years as a nanny and housekeeper for the Trainor family who became beloved friends and adopted family to Herman and Theresa. A sought-after cake maker, she baked and decorated hundreds of wedding, anniversary and celebration cakes that many mourners will remember.
Lifetime member of Holy Guardian Angels Parish as well as devoted members of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Port Hawkesbury, Theresa and Herman engaged actively in community service, reflecting their commitment to helping others and their strong faith, through food drives, volunteering, and supporting local charities. Herman and Theresa made regular visits over the years to Sainte-Anne-de-Beaupré to worship and celebrate their faith.
Theresa spent summers at the cottage in L’Ardoise tending to her plentiful garden, enjoying feeds of mackerel, picking berries and enjoying visits with family and friends. An avid reader and researcher, Theresa took great pride in her ancestry and was often sought after for her knowledge of genealogy in the area. She was always willing to share her talents of crocheting, knitting and quilt-making with those interested in learning the
crafts.
In later years, many games of cards were enjoyed with neighbors and visitors at the Richmond Villa. Her cribbage game was strong, and Theresa knew it. She will be fondly remembered for her strong character, quick wit, sarcastic humor, kindness, and the love she brought to all who knew her.
She is survived by her special Godchildren Brain Trainer and Ronnie Berrette and niece Nancy Mombourquette who cared for her after Herman passed. Theresa will beremembered as a wonderful aunt, great aunt and great, great aunt to many nieces and nephews.
Theresa was the last surviving sibling in her family. She joins siblings Lena, George, Albert, Wilfred, Richard, Joseph and Mary in Heaven.
Resting will be held in Holy Guardian Angels Visitation Parlor on Monday, October 28th from 2:00pm to 8:00pm Funeral Mass will be offered Tuesday, October 29th at 11:00am from Holy Guardian Angels Roman Catholic Church, L’Ardoise with Father John Yake presiding; burial at the Parish Cemetery with reception to follow at the L’Ardoise Community Center.
