Obituary of Joan Frances Horne

HORNE, Joan Frances - Age 80, Canso, passed away peacefully in the Canso Seaside Manor on Thursday, October 3, 2024. Born in Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville, she was the daughter of Walter Reid and Ena Zwicker.

In her younger years she was employed with the Royal Canadian Air Force and National Seafoods in Canso. Joan was a member of Star of the Sea Parish in Canso.

She is survived by her son, Stephen (Susanne), Canso and grandkids, Alexandra (Corey) Blacklock, Crystal Lake, ON; Ryan (Lexie) Duncan, Kirkland Lake, ON; sisters, Mary Conrad, Amherst; Roberta Kuhn, Chester; brothers, Kevin (Laura) Newell, Canso; Edward (Vicky) Newell, Dartmouth; and many nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her parents, her husband of 33 years, Rick Horne; her son, James "Jimmy" Richards and his father, James "Jim" Richards Sr.,; brothers, Bud Newell, Robert "Bobby" Newell and Michael "Mike" Newell; sisters, Elsie Megetto and Cathy Parker.

Later in life, Joan attended a Graphic Design course at the NSCC in Kentville, where she explored her creativity and computers. She enjoyed quilting and loved her dogs, Sage and Ernie. She also was a fan of music and always looked forward to the Stan Rogers Festival and seeing all the family and friends her and Rick made over the decades. She opened her home and her heart to all those that showed up to fill her kitchen and yard with songs, stories and laughter.

Visitation will be on Friday, October 18th from 7-9 p.m. in Dennis Haverstock Funeral Home, Canso. Funeral mass will be 11 a.m. on Saturday, October 19th from Star of the Sea Parish, Canso with Father Jonathan officiating. Burial will follow in the parish cemetery. A reception will follow the burial in the Shamrock Club in Canso. Family flowers only please. Memorial donations may be made to Canso Seaside Manor. Special thanks to the staff of the Canso Seaside Manor for the care Mom received over her stay. Words of comfort may be forwarded to the family at www.haverstocks.com
