Norma Jean Dobson
1933-2024
Norma Jean (Swaine) Dobson, 90, passed away peacefully in Cobequid Community Health Centre, Lower Sackville, on Tuesday, August 27, 2024, after a long illness. Born in Canso, Guysborough County, she was the youngest daughter of the late Walter Lewis and Mary Catherine (Spears) Swaine and the last surviving member of her immediate family.
She was a dedicated homemaker with a gift for personal finances and was well-known in the Canso area for her handcrafted quilts. She was also fiercely independent and faced challenges with strength and resilience. She spoke her mind, so you always knew where you stood with her, and her sense of humour was finely honed.
“Normie” is survived by her son, Roy (Joanne), Saskatoon; daughters, Sharon (Bruce) Farrell, Truro; Mary (Colin) MacDonald, Wasaga Beach; Betty, Halifax; Erin, Eastern Passage; five grandchildren, Charlotte, Robin, Lenore, Zachary, and Delanie); seven great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Leonard; son, James; and 12 brothers and sisters.
A memorial service will be held 2 p.m., Friday, October 25, 2024 in Canso United Baptist Church with Rev. David Wheeler officiating, with a private family burial in Bayview Cemetery, Half Island Cove. Family flowers only, by request. Donations may be made to the Canso United Baptist Church, P.O.
