Renee and I were both members of MSH, as well as CHA where we attended monthly Zoom meetings. Rener and I both graduated from the Canadian College of Homeopathy, formerly the Toronto School of Homeopathic Medicine, but at different times. We became acquainted through the school's email group, then by video, and personally after I moved to Nova Scotia.
I was in awe of Renee's calm determination and how her tone of voice and way of expressing herself landed strong points firmly and gently. She was very supportive to me both personally and professionally. Renee shared her knowledge, time and experience freely and generously, while deftly remaining true to herself. Although we've been friends for only a couple of years, I count her among my greatest friends.
I've had the honour reviewing a couple of chapters of a book she was wrapping up. I hope we will all get to read it.
My condolences to you all. I'm deeply grateful for the gift of Renee to myself and the world, and sorry for our collective loss.

Peter, Natasha, Sheldon, Tiffany and family!
Renee swooped into Canso and made a difference! Her involvement in groups such as the Canso Garden Club, the Library and Resource Center, as well as others have benefited these groups immensely! Her contributions made them successful and they will endure because members will ensure that they do. What she did for individuals, many that will remain private, have given comfort and encouragement to them.
Edmund and I will be unable to attend the celebration but rest assured that Renee touched our lives and that friendship will always remain a cherished possession.
Our sincerest condolences to you all!
We will see you again when next you return to Canso! Safe travels!

I saw Renee when she was visiting Hamilton last year. I went up to hug her and was overcome with emotion as I recalled the safe and welcoming space she created with The Womens Bookstore for me personally when I was coming out and for so many in the queer community. I am so glad that I had the opportunity to tell her this. RIP Renee

I would like to extend my condolences to all the family for their sad loss. Renée was an amazing member of the feminist community in Hamilton. I met Renée when I was Executive Director of the Women's Centre of Hamilton. The opening of Renée's bookstore brought a vital resource to the women of Hamilton as a place to meet, learn and share as we navigated what being a feminist meant. May she rest in peace.

I have so many memories of spending time hiking with Renee or swimming in Fox Island or Little Dover. I remember the time we went to Cole Harbour (Guysborough County) to Radar Base # 5 in the fall of 2015. A pair of Canada Grey Jays (whisky jack or camp robbers to some) flew ahead of us all the way up the hill, she was quite impressed never having seen these birds before. It was as if they were showing us the way.
Renee introduced me to homeopathic medicine, relaxation breathing and many other healthy views.
Renee joined our Pickle Ball group in the winter of 2022 and was always game to entertain us with her little dance before serving, we will miss her.
Fast forward to this past February after the big snowfall.....she came snowshoeing with myself and several others behind the school. Renee really appreciated the tranquility of the snow and forested trail even stopping to hug a tree along the way.
Renee's love of our little piece of heaven will live on in all of us who were privileged to know her.
Deepest sympathy to Peter, Sheldon, Tiffany, Natasha and their families

In the 90s, a group of Hamilton women were interested in initiating a writing group. Using “Writing Down the Bones” as a starting place, we planned a Saturday workshop. Because Renee was a community leader, and a woman with ideas who owned the BookStop, she told us to post a notice on her bulletin board. We did, women responded, and we had a wonderful day of words, support, tears, sharing, and plans for the future. We became the Women’s Writing Group and began meeting at my house very other Thursday.
Renee was a vocal and vibrant part of the group. The women were exciting, creative, funny, and supportive. We formed a strong bond. Over the years, women came and left but the group went on. Not sure if I ever thanked Renee for all she gave. We have recently lost two other original members who would be devastated by Renee’s passing. That’s Ellen Jaffe and Angel Hrboviak, may they all rest in piece. Now, 30 years later, the group continues. So wonderful. Maybe we should change our name to the BookStop writers in remembrance of Renee, a beautiful woman gone way too soon. Deepest condolences to her family.❤️

So very sorry to hear about Renee's passing. I didn't know her at all when she opened up her home and welcomed me into it. She was one of those rare people who could accept you as you were and inspire you to be better at the same time...in the first five minutes of meeting her. I feel very lucky to have been able to meet her and Peter and be shown around Canso with our friend Christina. It was very clear how much she loved it and the people in it. I can't imagine the loss her nearest and dearest are feeling right now, and my thoughts are with you.

Sending my condolences to Peter and family. I was heartbroken to hear of her passing. She welcomed me as a friend when I first came to Canso and still sent me wonderful pictures and videos of Canso after I left. We were in daily contact with her positive words and great sense of humour. Her spirit always filled every room she entered and she will be so very missed. I am so grateful to have been her friend!

Dear Peter,Sheldon, Natalie, and Family,
Please accept my condolences on Renee's death. Renee was so vibrant, no more so than when she was sharing her love of Canso. Peter, you and Renee showed my friends, Janet and Erin such a good time when we stayed with you Renee in her beautiful yellow house on the hill (house you have lovingly cared for over the years and which she filled with her amazing art). Those days are some of my favourite memories of not just Renee, but of you and the bond you and Renee shared. May you be held by the love of family and friends in the days and weeks ahead ~ may memories come to bring comfort and, one day, laughter, and may you always know that Renee and her love for you reside safely in your heart. Blessings to you, Peter, and your dear family.
Namaste, Christina

Renee was our inspiration...the person who urged us as women. to be the best we can and to step outside of " the box" to enthusiastically embrace new opportunities! Her energy and enthusiasm were contagious as she led by example!
Renee laid the foundations for many of the activities and cultural opportunities that are available in our area today.
Thank you Renee for sharing your precious gifts. You leave a legacy that few can match!

Renee was a great addition to our area and she jumped in the ocean of needs with two feet. No testing the waters first for Renee . I remember my first time meeting her and her gaze in particular. Her eyes held a twinkle of curiosity, but they were much more than that. They also reflected her spirit and her drive to be a positive force for change. Renee adopted the area especially Canso and its people. She left many marks on the community, forged many friendships and helped many folks deal with the ups and downs of life. Our area and her much loved Canso has lost a friend but she will be remembered in many situations like visiting the Library, watching a sunrise, counting the ocean waves, listening to the many songs of the birds and following the sun as it drops to the horizon. Rest well Renee and may you family find peace and comfort

Renee’s passing is a tremendous loss. I have so many memories of her courage, creativity, humour, and generosity. She invited me to go along to the 1990 Feminist Book Fair in Barcelona with her, Natasha and another friend and I got to watch Renee as she mingled with smart, politically active women from around the world. She was open-hearted and fierce and other women responded to her energy, passion, and vulnerability. The Women’s Bookstop on Hamilton’s Main Street West was a safe and supportive spot and Renee engaged so many of us in feminist organizing, artistic endeavours and putting on Lesbian/women’s dances at the YWCA. It was an absolute joy and honour to have known Renee. She’ll be dearly missed. My deepest condolences to her family and friends.

Renee was a founding board member of ArtWorks East when we launched in 2019 and she became a good friend to Lee and me. Her voice pushed us in new directions as she quietly advocated for women, youth, African-Canadians, and her home town of Canso. We loved her folk art paintings in the summer gallery and we delighted when her latest book (Keep Your Chin Up) came out in 2023. However, there was so much about the many talents of Renee Sagebear that we didn’t know about. She was truly a humble but highly accomplished woman.
