Obituary of Vincent Earl Cohoon
COHOON, Vincent Earl – 69, Canso, passed away peacefully surrounded by his wife and family on Friday, January 12th, 2024, in the Eastern Memorial Hospital, Canso. Born in Canso, Vince was the son of the late David and Nina (Snow) Cohoon. Vince was a devoted family man, upstanding man of the community, and an avid outdoorsman.
Vince was a partner with Canso Construction Ltd. before moving on to a 28-year career with the Nova Scotia Liquor Corporation. He also dedicated 46+ years to volunteer service within the community. He loved Canso and held a deep pride for the town, its people, and the small town, coastal lifestyle. He knew the vital role volunteers play in small communities and his sense of duty compelled him to do his part. Vince served as a member of the Canso Legion, served on the town council for 25 years, and was a proud serving member in the Canso Volunteer Fire Department from 1975 – 2021, with a total of 18 years as Fire Chief. His service helped ensure the building of the local arena, fire department, purchase of a fire truck, hundreds of local fundraisers, and coaching children of the community in various sports.
In addition to his volunteerism, Vince also held a deep-rooted passion for the outdoors, whether on the water fishing with the winning team of the Canadian 1994 Tuna Cup, duck hunting with his son, nephews, friends, and brothers-in-law, or roaming the local forests deer hunting and working traplines. In recent years, Vince enjoyed spending time with his wife and family, tinkering around in his shed, daily video chats with his children, and building relationships with his grandchildren.
Vince is survived by his loving wife of 42 years, Eileen, and his cherished children, Roddie (Lisa), and Charlene (Matt). He was a beloved grandfather to four grandchildren: Jaxson, Sailor, Zachary, and Willow. Vince (Grampy) adored his role as grandfather and enjoyed watching them play in his backyard and in the “tiddle” where he spent his own childhood days. He is also survived by his siblings, Marie (Jim), Greg (Mary), and Lawrence (Lilja), mother-in-law, Gertie Snow, 8 sisters-in-law and 9 brothers-in-law.
He was preceded in death by his parents (Dave and Nina), his sister (Theresa), father-in-law, (Doug Snow) and his best friend, Angus MacDonald.
In addition to his family, Vince leaves behind a host of friends and neighbours who will forever remember his soft heart, brought to tears so easily, as well as his strong voice and loud, lively laugh.
Cremation has taken place under the compassionate care and guidance of Dennis Haverstock Funeral Homes. Visitation will take place between 2-8pm on Friday, January 19th, 2024, at Dennis Haverstock Funeral Home, Canso. A funeral service to celebrate Vince’s life will be held at 11am on January 20th, 2024, at Star of the Sea Parish in Canso.
The family would like to express their deepest gratitude to the staff at the Eastern Memorial Hospital, Canso, for their care and support during Vince’s time there. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to the Alzheimer’s Society of Canada.
