Alanna was a kind and generous person who offered help and kind words always. She and my late husband Flavio were on many committees. When my husband passed away, Alanna offered to write his obituary ...saying "let me have the honour of doing this for you." It was written with love and a personal touch by Alanna. We offer our sincere condolences, huge hugs to you John and to your children and their families. May God guide and may your memories help guide you always.

Allana was known as a fantastic teacher, principal, mentor, neighbour, member of our church family, and so much more.
But, first and foremost, she was a Wife, Mother, Nanny, and Sister, Allana was fiercely proud of all of her family, and rightly so. Her face would light up at a mere mention of any member and she would love to fill you in on all of the stories about her family. Allana had a gentle, warm and loving smile, her demeanor was always graceful, kind and caring. We will miss our chats as we walked our neighbourhood and ran into Allana and John.
We know that you all have seen firsthand, the impact that Allana has left on our community. We can only pray that all of the stories that have been told about Allana, will bring a smile to your face as your tears flow.
May God Bless you all in your time of need.
Our most heartfelt condolences to you all.
Sincerely,

It was my privilege to meet with Allana as an educator/administrator while we both worked as classroom teachers and in high school administration, she in Cape Breton, myself in Antigonish. We also worked together as Supervisors for Student Teachers in the Faculty of Education at StFX. She epitomized all that is good for an educator working in the classroom and as part of the administrative team: that is - she established an atmosphere of firm, fair, loving structure wherever she worked. She worked as part of a team, giving the custodial and secretarial support employees just as much credit for the smooth running of the school as anyone involved. In these days when public sentiment seems to run with the attitude that there is a limit to what amount of work one should be asked to do, Allana was the total opposite, going the extra mile whenever necessary.
It is no surprise that she has had such an effect on former students, particularly in her ability to inspire confidence and perseverance for those who were struggling, in Math and in life.
To John and the family, I want to send sincere condolences on behalf of George and myself. She will be missed in all quarters.

The words written to describe this beautiful woman, are the truest I’ve ever heard spoken. Many nights before I found her, I found myself questioning my abilities, frustrated, discouraged and trying every avenue to learn and to understand. Alanna made me feel valued, intelligent, understood, she was patient, kind, warm. I sat at her kitchen table for many nights and felt as if we were just doing something as simple as watching tv. She made me comfortable and confident and I honestly remember feeling like I wanted to be the best version of myself when I was around her. Even though she was tutoring me in academics it felt like I was simply visiting an old friend. The finger prints will never fade from the lives you touch. Love and support from Judique

My sincere sympathy to all Alanna’s family on her loss. As children in Glengarry & SW Mabou, our families visited each other frequently. Only a few at a time, as both had large families. We so enjoyed Mary Anne & Allan’s visits. As children we all attended a one room schoolhouse, “Baden School”, just up the hill from Alanna’s parents home. Those were the “good old days”! May God give you comfort in your beautiful memories of Alanna. May it help to know your family & friends are praying for Alanna & you all at this time of such great loss.

Mrs. MacInnis, it’s been a long time. But no matter the passage of time, I will never forget the kindness and patience you showed me in my time at SAERC and your warm and comforting smile.
I cannot for the life of me remember an instance where, no matter the aggravation or mischief I caused, that I still wasn’t greeted with your kindness, compassion and respect, whether I really was deserving of them in the moment, or not.
When I reminisce of my years at SAERC, you are always one of the people and faces that are etched in that time and those school year memories.
This news has hit me hard this morning. It’s a tough reminder that we do lose the very best of us.
To your family and friends, I hope that the knowledge that Mrs. MacInnis, undoubtedly loved and revered in your circle, has left an undeniable impression on thousands of lives through her kindness, warmth, understanding and unconditional support and dedication to those of us that have been lucky enough to have called her a teacher, a principal, an administrator, an ally, a neighbour.
I know that I’m not alone when I say, that until the day comes that I take my own last breath, Mrs. MacInnis, your Mrs. MacInnis, will never fail to elicit a smile and warm memories from myself and so many others, grateful for having been a very small part of her journey.
It’s my hope that in this trying time and in the years ahead, you all can find some comfort with the knowledge that she touched and made positive impacts in so many of our lives. I still can’t drive through the old neighbourhood of Tamarac without a smile and a flicker in my eye as I pass the MacInnis house on Oak Crescent.
I wish you all strength and peace in your time of mourning and as you continue to carry her light. Thank you for sharing such a wonderful and beautiful person with us.
Truly a life, and a person to celebrate.
Yours,
Sean McCann. (SAERC ‘00)

While living and working in Port Hawkesbury where we were stationed with the RCMP from 1988 to 1994, and where our daughter Tanya, attended SAREC, we can attest that many stories were shared among the students of the value and caring of Mrs. MacInnis. Any teacher whose legacy lives on well beyond the graduation period of so many grateful students is a great loss to any community. We did not know the family but with Alanna’s abilities to guide and lead in an educational setting, certainly would soar in the role of a parent. Please accept our heartfelt condolences on this great loss to your family and the community of Port Hawkesbury. Rest in well deserved and earned peace Mrs. MacInnis, you may be sure your legacy lives on through those who lives you touched in the classroom and beyond.

Words are simply not adequate. Alanna was my homeroom teacher in 7th grade, when I was a scared, awkward, preteen from a small, rural classroom (with less than 12 kids in my 6th grade) in Princeville to "the big school" in town. I remember her fondly, and count her as one of the teachers who helped me adjust to a new stage of my life, and provided me with the confidence and desire for life-long learning that I have today.
