Paul was my neighbour, my friend, and a friend to our local arts association (ArtWorks East). I enjoyed the spontaneous visits to his home and often brought my other friends and family to meet him. We enjoyed his humor, his outspoken dogmatism, and the sincere, kind solicitation that underscored everything. We all admired his mastery with leather goods.
ArtWorks East has a summer gallery on the Guysborough waterfront. Every time I'm in there, I think of Paul because he provided most of the metal display grids that made the gallery possible. The "bones" of that gallery came from Paul! I would have liked very much to display Paul's leather handiwork as well, but he was easing out of business just as we got started.
Paul had a considerable, eclectic library. His friends (Michael, Irmi, and Maud Peters) gathered his books and held a 2-day book sale with donations all going to ArtWorks East. We raised $446.40! And then Paul's son (Dart) and his wife Kristen decided to double that amount, So even in parting, Paul continued to contribute to the visual arts in Guysborough.
On behalf of ArtWorks East, I can say that all of us really miss this remarkable man.

"Uncle Paul" was probably the first person who entered our lives when we arrived here fresh from Germany in 1988, and stayed. He was a constant in our entire Canadian existence. He brought laughter and rantings, joy and frustration. He was larger than life with his strong opinions and deep rooted idealisms. His sense of self rivalled most, and his stubbornness....oh that stubborness....it was legendary. But....he became family. He was our only family here in Canada. He would visit almost daily, with a ravenous appetite and always with a story to tell or opinion to share. We never knew how much of his stories were factual or embellished, but that didn't matter...they were riveting either way. When he laughed, he roared. When he ranted, he roared. And when he watched a silly movie on TV...he definitely roared.
To our community, he was the Mountain Man. The Leather Man. The crazy old fart on the hill. Oh he was so many things...and I believe he will remain so many things to many people. His life was a full one. An adventurous one, and he stubbornly lived it his way until the very end.
It will be strange to adjust. But your presence will be felt for many years to come.
Wherever you are now Mr. Marcella, I'm sure your audience is as captivated by your stories as we all were. Thank you for the laughs, the love, and the many many memories. Rest easy now, Uncle Paul

What could I say about friendship? Well, Paul and I go back many years. Over 40 years. Being both leather workers, it didn't take long for us to become friends. It started with clog making. Mine with heavy cowhide and his, to my surprise were of soft leather and in many colors. I made bags. Big bags. As big as a van as Paul would love repeating at different happenings. He had a good memory. I enjoyed when he talked about his Dad, the place he worked sharpening blades for a cutting mill up in Northern Ontario, his mother, super religious, and the priest who was Jesus on earth.
Paul was perfect in Nova Scotia. A man with stories, a kind spirit. I went to visit him 4 times, 2 of those with my spouse, Francine. She would sit on the deck knitting and Paul liked that. She also cooked food that he would smile to. We had beer and a little shot of rum. We would talk and talk and talk. We had many stories to share. When he came to do the Ottawa Spring show, he stayed with me, and we also stayed with him in Nova Scotia.
My first time in Boylston, I took the train and hitchhiked to his house. He had a great protective dog. He ran after me, I ran and jumped through a window which by chance was not locked. Paul came home and found me inside. Some day I will share the time he came on a trip to Israel with me and my daughter. We travelled across the land. I could go on and on and on.
My brother, my friend that I love.

Dear Paul
As your "neighbor" and friend from far away, once a year, always in the summer, there was our special encounter on your porch. Over a beer we could chat and discuss and laugh and joke and think together about God and the wide world and your sense of humor was unique and unforgettable. For me you were not only a gifted craftsman but also a thinker, yes, you definitely were! Your great belts will always remind me of you and I will not forget your jokes and your wisdom. We all miss you, the very famous "mountain man"
Rest in peace
Martin

Sending our thoughts to all of Paul’s family. Embrace all the love and support.

My heart is heavy today for so many reasons after learning from a fellow artist of Paul’s passing.
To his family and close friends on the mountain overlooking Chedabucto Bay, please accept my sincere condolences, as you all navigate the loss of an incredible gifted human being.
I know that my life has been enriched from knowing, spending time and learning from Paul, especially his love of leather crafting beautiful handmade leather pieces. I will be forever grateful for the time that I spent with Paul, and I have never taken it this time for granted.
With much love and gratitude, Tabitha
