Obituary of Anna Margaret Gillis

Please share a memory of Anna to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our Mother, Anna Margaret (MacDonald) Gillis who died at Strait Richmond Hospital on Saturday, December 23rd.  Born on May 12, 1936 in Kingsville, NS, Anna was the daughter of Dan P. and Mary Catherine (Mona) MacDonald.

At a very early age, Anna moved to Halifax, NS and then to Boston, MA where she married the love of her life, Duncan, and they raised their five children.  She worked at various jobs in the States including Dunkin Donuts, where she would always bring home a dozen donuts to her children.  She was also a Teacher's Aid for many years in the Boston Public School System.  In 1978, Anna moved back to Cape Breton with Duncan and her family and enjoyed her life here.  Anna will be remembered for her love of family, her knitting, which was loved and appreciated by many, her love of the Red Sox and a good game of cards.

Anna is survived by her children; Donna (Wayne) McNamara, Lower River, Florence (Paul) Gerus, Norfolk, MA, Duncan, Waltham, MA, Joan, Port Hawkesbury and Jean (David) Ryan, Port Hawkesbury, grandchildren; Jennifer (Caleb), Grand Prairie, AB, Matthew (Bhreagh), Antigonish and Bradley (Judith), Antigonish, sisters; Mary Boudreau, Waltham, MA and Kathleen Lussier, Waltham, MA and  brother; Angus (Grace) MacDonald, Port Hastings.  She is also survived by sister-in-law Marie MacDonald and brother-in-law Alexander Gillis and many nieces and nephews.

We would like to acknowledge and thank Dr. Collins, Dr. LaRoche and the Nursing Staff at the Palliative Care Unit at the Strait Richmond Hospital for the care that was given to our Mother.

Per Anna's request there will be no visitation and a private burial will be held at a later date to lay her to rest at St Joseph's Cemetery with her husband, Duncan.
