Captain Joseph V. Murphy

It is with broken hearts we announce the sudden passing of Joseph V. Murphy, 70, on Tuesday, November 21, 2023, at his home in Newtown, Cape Breton, NS.

Born on February 14th, 1953, in Montague PE, Joe was the eldest son of Francis and Bibiana (née Campbell). Joe was a master mariner, and travelled the world prior to meeting his wife, Sara, in Musquodoboit Harbor. Together, they moved to Cape Breton and started their family. Joe was a devoted husband and father, and loved living in Cape Breton.

Joe was well known and respected for his dedication and hard work during his 35-year career at the Nova Scotia Nautical Institute in Port Hastings, NS. He was deeply loved by his students. Joe was mechanically minded and enjoyed working on old lawnmowers and cars. He had a deep love for English literature, and a mastery of both written and spoken language. Joe loved being outside and could often be found walking along Route 19 or the Celtic Shores Coastal Trails. His kind nature, sense of humor, and humble presence were gifts to all who had the honor of knowing him.

Joe is survived and will be deeply missed by his wife, Sara (née Fitzgerald), his loving children Kaylee (Andrea) and Brennan (Venus), and his granddaughter Josephine. He is also survived by his brothers Peter (Rene), Glen (Kahreen), Ernie (Dawn), and Danny (Jackie), and his sisters Caroline (Ute), Mary Elaine (Emmett), Joyce (Scott), and Doris (Dan). He is survived by sisters in law Nancy, JoAnn (Miles), Shirley (Joe), and brothers in law Johnny and Rick (Jean). He is also survived by many nieces, nephews, and cousins. Besides his parents, Joe is predeceased by his brother Alvin.

Funeral will take place at Stella Maris Parish in Creignish, NS, on Saturday, November 25th, at 11AM. Reception to follow at the Creignish Community Centre. Private family burial at a later date. Memorial donations may be made to Heart and Stroke Foundation.
