After years of struggling to have a family, I found myself at the Amherst hospital with an illness. We had given up hope on conceiving as I had been told it just wasn’t possible for me. On that special day, as I waited in the hospital room to be seen by the doctor working that day, we were blessed with a visit from Dr. Ferguson.
Instantly, he put us at easy and we chatted about family and struggles, and we opened up to him about our recent devastating news abut not being able to conceive. Dr. Ferguson looked me in the eyes, leaned forward, and then slapped his knee as he proclaimed that what I needed was to take a break and forget about it all. “Go on a vacation,” he said, “and stop trying. Don’t even think about it. Go have a good time, unwind, have some drinks, and relax.”
We chatted a bunch more about life, said our goodbyes, and went our separate ways. A few months later, we heeded Dr. Ferguson’s advice and went in a cruise. My partner and I hadn’t been intimate in quite some time as we were both emotionally exhausted from years of disappointment and sadness. However, while on the cruise, we celebrated my birthday and cast all of our worries aside. And, we conceived our son, naturally.
I had a healthy pregnancy, carried to term, and gave birth to a healthy baby boy. He is turning nine this weekend.
Years later, earlier this year in fact, I had the good fortune of meeting Dr. Ferguson again while suffering from a herniated disc. He showed me the same compassion and care as he did many years ago, and I had wanted to tell him about my son and how his advice helped us to conceive when we were told by other medical professionals that it was not possible for us. Unfortunately, I didn’t have the chance to tell him and thank him as I was distracted by the pain I was in. My heart is broken over the loss of this wonderful human and my heart goes out to his family and dear friends. No one could ever take this man’s place, however, his spirit will live on in the memories and lives of those he’s impacted and inspired. ❤️

I will miss the many weekend gatherings at Brian’s kitchen table ( even the one he and I changed when Celina wasn’t home) whether it was having a “refreshment” or something to eat. I first met Brian in 1984 when he moved to Amherst with Celina. Over the years ,as I moved about we kept in touch. When I returned to Amherst in 96, our social visits became more frequent and it was always fun to discuss with Brian and Celina the news of the day or play Guess that Tune from the 60-70s. He seem to know them all. He was there for myself and Adam when Alison passed and provided much needed support as he did for many in Cumberland County, regardless of the time or day. His finesse around the barbecue was exceptional as. he had everything perfectly time to provide that exceptional meal. His prowess with the staple, sorry the knife, was the undoing of many a Christmas turkey.
I will miss him dearly and I am sure he is in a better place. Cheers my friend and God Speed

My sincere condolences to Brian’s entire family! I was blessed to work with Brian for 16 years. There will never be anyone that can fill his shoes. He had such a brilliant mind and was always willing to share his knowledge with coworkers and patients alike. He gave so much of himself to the people in Cumberland County and surrounding areas. It did not go unnoticed. I sincerely hope he knew the impact he had on so many people’s lives. He was one of the good ones and I was lucky to call him my friend.

Our chance encounter with Dr. Ferguson was miraculous. I know, if it were not for Dr. Ferguson walking through the maternity unit in July 2014, my daughter wouldn't be here with us today.
Our attending physician was not in the hospital when my labour progressed, much quicker than anticipated. When I exclaimed to the nurse that the baby was coming, I felt the panic in the room.
One of the nurses left the room and miraculously, came back with Dr. Ferguson. He just happened to be in the maternity ward at that exact moment, to check in on another unexpected patient that he assisted delivering their baby just days before.
When he entered the room, he brought with him the reassurance I needed to know that everything was going to be ok. When he looked me in the eyes and asked me to focus on him, I went from complete panic to feeling a wave of calm.
From my experience, I'm going to assume he had this unique way of making genuine, human connection with anyone he met. When he noticed my baby had the umbilical cord tightly wrapped around her little neck; not once, but twice, his expertise, focus and skill in removing the umbilical cord was unforgettable. He safely delivered our daughter, and his memory will live on in our family as a hero.
To the family and friends of Dr. Ferguson, we are deeply sorry for your loss. Your loved one was a kind and remarkable individual who touched the lives of so many.

Dr. Ferguson was just an amazing individual. He was not only a great doctor but had an amazing ability to help many people find their direction. My eldest son spent a week with him in his first year of university to see what it was like to be a physician. His experience was just incredible, and the hospitality provided by Dr. White and family was beyond what anyone could have expected. He had such a great experience he did not want to come home! I wonder how many young people became a health care professional because of his mentorship?
Thank you so much Brian for all that you did and the lives you helped and impacted. Rest in Peace my friend.

As my doctor, I wasn't surprised to have him stop me for a chat when my husband (Charlie) was in the hospital. What did surprise me (and am so grateful for) was his offer to help us in any way he could (and his drop ins on Charlie) even though he wasn't Charlie 's primary care person.
I carried that offer in my "back pocket" for the rest of Charlie's life knowing that I had some one I could reach out to for help.

Dear Celina, Mike, Brad, Devin, Aaron, and families.
After transferring to Amherst from Antigonish, my husband had the privilege of having Brian as his Family Physician for twenty-one years. Clarence’s doctor in Antigonish, Dr. Mike MacKenzie, did him the tremendous favour of referring him to Brian in 1998. I often wondered if Clarence made appointments with Brian because he actually had a medical concern, or because he so enjoyed Fergie’s friendship.
As a teacher of three of your four boys, I was always mesmerised by the fact that, while providing a wonderful childhood for your sons, you still succeeded in raising such delightful, caring, and impressive young men. They were loved but not spoiled. They, like their Dad, worked hard, but knew how to have fun. In fact I so enjoyed them that, knowing I was retiring and would not be teaching Aaron, I even persuaded him to help me in the Learning Centre on a few occasions. These remarkable young men are a treasure and a lasting legacy.
The two of us feel privileged to have known this extraordinary man. Please accept our most sincere condolences. As a personal tribute I shall be posting on my FB page, “Life’s Mystery-FERGIE: THE GOOD DOCTOR-THE SEQUEL.”

Dr. Ferguson's legendary humour on my worst day of life was the single best healthcare experience I have ever had. Staying hours after a 12 hour hospital shift to help family navigate the end of life for a patient he didn't know, was just a normal thing for this man. His 1000 watt personality and persistant advocacy for patients during his duties was a very rare thing. Every single time he has been mentioned people recall similar exceptional acts of decency and kindness. Brian has earned one of the largest extended families a person can have. Nova Scotia and his family have lost a real shining star. He will be missed, but remembered by so so many.

When I heard the news of Dr Ferguson’s, my heart sunk. To say our community has lost one of the best advocates they have ever had would be an understatement.
Losing Dr. Ferguson will mean that we will all have to stand up a bit more to fill the void that he is leaving behind.
He was kind, caring, passionate, tenacious, able, personal, special and an advocate for our community! He was the BEST family doctor! He listened to hear!
I will never forget his apology to me on behalf of someone that had not acted very professionally the night my mother passed. When I finally shared with him what had happened, he could have brushed me off. After all it was probably two years after the fact, but he didn’t. He listened, he understood and he apologized for something he had no part in but to help bring closure to me. I have other specific memories where Dr Ferguson proved the kind of man and doctor he was, but will leave it at that one for now.
I hope he knew in his heart that the larger community loved him for all he did for us!!
My sympathy to his family, friends and to our community as a whole!
We will miss this giant of a man!
The picture shared is one I took during an appointment. Dr Ferguson had just had a big write up in the newspaper and I had teased him and said that I needed a picture with this celebrity! He indulged me and I smile everytime I see it!

It is with great sadness, and heavy heart that we hear of Dr. Ferguson's passing. He was a hero to the Amherst community and surrounding communities. This obituary is very well written and captures the true life of Brian. I was fortunate enough to have been a patient of his for 38 years. I loved to "get him going". Like when he delivered my son Lawson in 1990. Brian was in a hurry as he was going away for a medical conference or something and the delivery was quick. I knew because he was away that I could get him going by sending him flowers to the old outpatient dept at the old hospital. I wrote on the card " Brian, thanks for the other night. It was a quickie but you were great. PS how is your finger". The next time I was in to see him he laughed so hard at me being able to "get him" He claimed the nurses had the envelope so thin from rubbing it to see who the flowers were from. He always said he would get me back. He was a great guy and will forever be loved by many of us who loved him as a great doctor and person. I can also say... many years later that my son Lawson was part of the kitchen parties that you speak of in the obituary. ...and he enjoyed them and the laughter with Brian and boys. Rest in peace Brian...you have impacted many lives and we are thankful for you and you will be missed. ...Hugs Cathy MacLeod and family

Sending deepest condolences to Celina and sons and their families. He was the best Doctor I had and helped me through many rough times. I remember I went to him because I was going through menopause and I said Dr Ferguson Iam having rages that I never had before and I know what I should do but I just don't seem to be able to control how out of control they are, he listened intently and I said I feel like I could tear someone's face off at times he raised his eyebrows and looked over his glasses at me with the smile and said well I need to fix that so after asking a few more questions he gave me a script and said kid I'll see you in a weeks time unless you start to feel worse. A week later I sat there he came in and said well, how are you feeling I blurted I think I'm better I will at least take 10 seconds to think about tearing someone's face off after he had a good Fergie chuckle he said he thought we were on the right path and we were. I liked Dr Ferguson and when he closed his practice I was devastated but enjoyed running into him a few times at ER. He will never be forgotten by those who were lucky to have been his patient, friend and neighbor. Rest easy kid you earned it.

My deepest condolences to Celina, Michael, Brad, Devin, Aaron and family. Where does one start when you talk about Brian? He was the best. Brian always made himself available to my family and myself no matter what the need may have been. Having my children grow up with his boys was incredible. Spent many road trips with Brian over the years travelling with Hockey and baseball and I have so much respect for Brian and the way he treated my kids and me. Always made to feel at home whether it was at a rink, baseball field, a vehicle driving to and from or the John Black Road. The laughs that were shared over the years and even tears made the memories ones that I’ll never forget. Celina and Brian opened their homes to all of us more times than I can count and I will be forever grateful to Doc Ferguson. He was one of a kind who will be extremely missed by our family and community. RIP Brian. Cheers to you and the Captain

I know the tributes that will be coming in will be astronomical but none will be more heartfelt. First I would like to thank you Dr. White for referring Conrad to your husband. You and Dr. Ferguson were what real doctors should be like. Dr. Ferguson took such wonderful care of Conrad until the end. One small story to pass on: Dr. Ferguson was in Halifax on a conference and Conrad was in the hospital in Amherst. They wanted to do a procedure on him and he wouldn't let them touch him until they called Halifax to speak to Dr. Ferguson first. I am so very sorry for you and your family's loss. Debra Carde

Best doctor my family ever had, we were with him for the 37 plus years that he practiced in Amherst. He was always kind, understanding, friendly and funny as hell! He will be sadly missed and always remembered by our family and community.

One of the main reasons I love obstetrics nursing is because of Dr.G. Brian Ferguson—as a student he helped me help a mom deliver a baby. I found my passion that night. However,he left obstetrics when I finally got to work there…something we always joked about as he credited himself for knowing that was my calling —and truth is he deserves the credit because he was right. He called it like he saw it—was a pillar for health care in Cumberland. I know I am better for knowing him and will thank him forever for being a compass in my nursing career. Rest in peace and god bless. —Pam Chappell -Gogan

Sending our love and strength to Celina, Michael, Brad, Devin, Aaron and all of Brian’s family. Our sons grew up together and the kindness shown by the Ferguson family to others is what we will forever hold in our hearts. Nora, Beau and Cameron you will come to know your grandfather through the wonderful and funny stories your dads will share. Rhonda Jackson and family
