Many years ago before I was married, Uncle David told me that Aunt Marion was "the very best thing that has ever happened in my life" ...a remarkable testament of his love. Kevin and I shared such a lovely visit with her just a month ago, and can appreciate that she was a magnificent mother, grandmother, great grandmother, aunt, and so much more to so many. Please accept our deepest condolences.

Marion was my aunt by marriage, she married my father’s younger brother David.
As a kid growing up, they were our next-door neighbors.
One of my earlier summertime memories of Marion was that she would often
load the car with kids and take us swimming at Troy beach. That was a real treat.
Another fond memory was that Marion liked to make candy and share it with the
neighborhood kids. (We were all cousins.)
I am disappointed in myself that I did not really appreciate Marion until much
later in life. I guess that was because I became too involved in my own world and
took a lot for granted.
Marion always enjoyed kids, one of her favorite pass times was to sit in her
recliner and watch our grandchildren and their friends coasting down the hill and
playing in the field. What really amazed her was watching how the kids could play
on the frozen ground in their bare feet.
After Dave had passed away in 2011, I eventually made it a habit of going to visit
Marion most Sunday’s after church. I quickly learned she loved Tim’s coffee and a
muffin; I made sure I always brought one with me. In the beginning I was a little
apprehensive as I didn’t know what we could talk about.
These visits made me realize what a special person Marion really was. Marion was
in her 90’s and her mind was as sharp a whip. She had a fantastic memory for
dates, names and events. She was an avid reader and was up to date on Political
and Current events. You could talk to her about anything, she was always
interested in what you had to say.
Marion liked talking about her childhood memories of visiting her Grandparents
in Sunnyside and “down the shore” from Mulgrave. Marion and her cousin Vivian
Embree would walk to the wharf and take the ferry to Mulgrave and continue
walking to her grandparents. For the trip home her grandfather would give them
fresh fish wrapped in brown paper but before they could reach Mulgrave, the
brown paper would be so soggy and wet they would have to throw the fish into
the harbor. This gave them a big laugh. I remember asking Marion if she would
mind if I recorded her stories. She quickly replied “John, I am scared I would make
a mistake.”
One time I asked Marion what made her decide to join the Canadian Military. She
said I had no intention of joining the Military. Her cousin Vivian wanted to join,
and she asked Marion to accompany her to the recruiting office. Marion did and
as a result of the interview at the recruiting office Vivian was rejected and Marion
was accepted.
Another little story Marion shared with me was that her training was very strict.
As she was taking her training Dave’s brother Harry was also in Cornwallis taking
his training. Whenever she met Harry, she would ask about Dave. Marion was
reprimanded for this as they were only to use “last names.”
Marion was very proud of her service and would say to me “I can still fit in my
uniform.” She was also aware of how important the Royal Canadian Legion is and
wanted to be sure that the Legion maintained their mission – That is to support
Veterans and their families.
After my visits with Marion, I always came home a better and more enriched
person.
In all my years I have never heard Marion say a bad, or mean word about anyone
and that is a great characteristic. That was Marion!
A true friend is forever a friend.
WE WILL REMEMBER THEM

Our condolences to you all on Marion’s passing. We have always wonderful memories of her never ending smile and laugh as well as her baking. Her recipe for Rhubarb Custard pie is the best in the land. And Christmas is never complete without her recipe for English Toffee. We so enjoyed her last birthday party and we’re hoping to attend another one. We are honoured to have known her so well. Huge hugs to you all. Bev and Wayne

Reading about the passing of your Mom, was like watching pages of our childhood. Langley’s garage was a neighborhood touchstone. We grew up around the turn, in a small White House, housing six children. My Dad, Lawrence was good friends with your Dad and I am sure our Mom touched your lives some where through the school system. Bicycle wheels pumped, your Dad changing the same tire never with a cross word on his face ,no matter how busy he was. You have our memories as a tribute to your family. Condolences. Dear Elizabeth, Russell and family,
I have very fond memories of your Mom. She faithfully visited Aunt Mattie each week where they shared tea time.
Marion made beautifully decorated little cakes for our wedding.
Marion lived a full life and will be missed by all who knew and loved her.
My thoughts are with you.
Hugs,
Bertha
