Obituary of Gary MacNeil

 

MacNEIL, Gary - Age 76, Port Hawkesbury. Passed away peacefully on Monday, August 21, 2023, at his home. Born in Sydney, he was a son of the late Basil and Catherine (Carter) MacNeil. He is survived by his loving wife, Bernadette “Sis” (Malcolm) MacNeil; as well as his two daughters, Shauna, and Shelly (Stephen) along with his grandchildren, Jadea (Shauna) and Frankie (Shelly) all of Port Hawkesbury.

Family was very important to Gary, especially his time spent with his two grandchildren. He is also survived by sisters-in-law, Mary MacNeil, Port Hawkesbury, and Brita MacNeil, Mira, along with his many nieces and nephews.

Gary was predeceased by his brothers, Basil Jr., and Morley. Gary is the last surviving member of his immediate family.

Gary was a retired employee of Stora, Point Tupper. He was a past president of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 43 in Port Hawkesbury. In his younger years, Gary enjoyed spending time with family and friends, camping, playing hockey and bowling. For many years, Gary played on various local ball teams, including The Hillbillies. Even when he could no longer play, he still enjoyed cheering on his Toronto Blue Jays and Maple Leafs.

Visitation will be held on Monday, August 28, 2023 from 2-4 p.m. in Dennis Haverstock Funeral Home, Port Hawkesbury. Burial to be held at a later date.

Memorial donations in Gary’s memory may be made to The Multiple Sclerosis Society of Canada, or the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 43 Poppy Fund.
