Hughes, Wayne Thomas Kevin – Age 79, Port Hawkesbury and formerly of Otterburn Park, QC and Bellevue, PEI passed away on Wednesday, April 26, 2023 in Strait Richmond Hospital, Evanston.

Born in Montreal, QC on July 23, 1943 to the late Thomas and Edna (Power) Hughes, he was also predeceased by his first wife, Anne Martina (MacLean) Hughes.

A past commodore of the Otterburn Boating Club, QC he competed, coached and refereed in both canoe racing and soccer.

A school teacher for 38 years, he taught in Otterburn Park, QC; Mont St. Hilaire, QC; Parkdale, PEI and Port Hawkesbury, NS. 

Wayne was a past member of the Otterburn Fire Department, Port Hawkesbury Children’s Aide Society, Orangedale Railway Museum, Port Hawkesbury Credit Union, Knights of Columbus, Council #7924 and the Port Hawkesbury Fire Department.

Wayne is survived by his wife, Norma (Pitre); daughter, Erin (Kyle Davis); sons, John, Stephen (Shelly MacNeil) and Brian and 4 Grandchildren, Emerson, Trex, Frankie and Kieran.  He also leaves behind step-children, Bernice (Alan Oikle), Michelle Smeenk, Allan Smeenk and Norman Smeenk.

There will be no visitation by request.  A funeral service will be at 2 p.m.  Sunday, April 30, in Dennis Haverstock Funeral Home, Port Hawkesbury with Father Duncan MacIsaac officiating.  Burial will follow in St. Joseph Parish Cemetery, Port Hawkesbury.
