My son took part in a penpal exchange between Alderwood residents and the Grade 3 class at Baddeck Academy. He was matched with Robert. They exchanged some sweet letters, and discovered they were actually related. He was saddened to hear of Robert's passing. We want to extend our sincere condolences to all of Robert's family and friends.

That day, we took the rail liner in Orangedale. It was winter and the snow had made many drifts across the rails. Robert invited us to ride with him in the cabin to get a better view and experience what it felt like to drive through drifts. Pouff... all went dark for a few seconds as we held our breath. Then we all laughed!
It was so kind of him to do that and we never forgot it.

Sorry to hear of Roberts passing. I worked with Bob, in Port Hawkesbury as a CNR Operator,
also as a CNR operator on the Gypsum Train where Bob was Engineer. Bob was a great person

My sincere condolences to Robert's immediate and extended family. I spent the winter of 2018 in MacLeod House. Robert and me had many long discussions about the history of the local area and the genealogy of local families. We would inevitably get stuck, not able to remember a name or a connection. Our talks often ended with Robert saying that he would need to get in touch with Allan in order to determine the answer that we needed.. I missed our chats after I returned home. He was a treasure, there were not many left like him.

Q: What will you never forget about Robert?
A: I will never forget Roberts devotion to his much loved brother Charlie Dan. I worked at The Richmond Villa for many years and I was blessed to work with residents like Charlie Dan. His family was devoted to him…. especially Robert. He never missed an opportunity to visit or ask if there was anything Charlie Dan wanted or needed. His genuine love, concern and respect for his brother and all his family was heartwarming. I was saddened to hear of his passing … the world has lost an amazing person. I am so happy that I got to know Robert. I admired him. Many who have gone before were there to greet him. Gods Blessings to you all.

In 2019, I met Robert for the first time when he lived in Mac Leod House, Baddeck, instantly was impressed with him and his conversation of years gone by, hence, returned for a planned road trip. It was a beautiful July 25th and we took off with no destination in mind. The conversation more or less determined this. I could listen to him all day talking about firing old railroad steam locomotives, running diesel power when the steam engines were taken from service and many other tasks he performed. This man captured my attention with a pleasant personality, alert mind and volumes of history. We even visited the Malagawatch Church relocated to Iona Highland Village which he would know. I consider myself very fortunate for those memories of Robert. Imagine spending a day with someone who actually fired a steam locomotive by shovelling coal into a firebox in order to keep the train moving ! It doesn’t get any better than that.

Q: What will you never forget about Robert?
A: Robert and Evelyn were my second parents when I was growing up. They were always there for me no matter how much trouble Sandra and I got into. Their love has always been the guidepost for how I love others.
I remember Robert sitting in the kitchen knitting socks. I remember making homemade ice cream with him. I remember countless summer days fishing for eels and swimming in Marble Mountain. I remember camping, so much camping. There was one time my Dad insisted he take me to Mass while we were away. Neither one of us wanted to go. But Robert was impeccable with his word and drug me, kicking and screaming, to church. I remember going to the United Church in Port Hastings, after hiding out under a neighbours deck so my Dad would have to leave without me to go to the Catholic Church in town. The United Church service was more fun, much shorter and there were always cookies afterwards.
Mostly, I remember Robert as a good and fine man. I never heard his raise his voice but I sure did she him showing his love.
God speed my almost father. Dance with Evelyn as soon as you get to Heaven.
