Obituary of Sarah Anne Cameron

Please share a memory of Sarah to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Cameron, Sarah (Harrietha), 87 of Glendale, Cape Breton passed away Monday, April 3, 2023 at Strait Richmond Hospital, Evanston Nova Scotia, after a brief illness. Born in Glace Bay, Nova Scotia she was the daughter of Neil and Josephine (MacNeil) Harrietha. She was predeceased by her husband Daniel “Francis” Cameron.

Sarah came to Glendale at age 8 and was raised by Ronald “Rannie” and Catherine MacEachern. As a young adult, she settled in Boston, where she spent time with the many Cape Bretoners who also made their way to the city. Spending time dancing and listening to Scotch music at the Canadian American Club brought Sarah and Francis (also from Glendale) back together. They married and raised their family of 11 children in Brookline, Massachusetts, before they returned to Glendale in 1980 with their 8 youngest children.

Sarah had a great sense of humor and was always a good sport.  While working at the MacPuffin Motel as a chambermaid she would often greet bus tours in a puffin bird suit. In the Port Hawkesbury 100-year parade, she was the focal point for a float dressed up as a 100-year-old woman bench pressing, and on her favorite holiday, Halloween, she would be known to drop into friend’s houses dressed as a wayward person passing through, never revealing her true identity.

Sarah loved being a part of the Glendale community.  She was a member of the Catholic Women’s League for many years, serving a term as President. She enjoyed volunteering at the church, doing various crafts, and relaxing with a cup of tea to tackle her cryptogram puzzles.  She will be sorely missed by her family and friends.

She is survived by her sisters Cecilia Kelly and Alma Murphy and her children Margaret (Thomas) McKenna, Brian (Elspeth) Cameron, Kevin (Barbara) Cameron, Donna Cameron, Danny (Stella) Cameron, Joan Cameron, John (Diane) Cameron, Jean (Michael) Morin, Janet (Steve) MacIntyre, Robert Cameron, Neil (Carole) Cameron. Her grandchildren and great-grandchildren include Kristen, Cameron, Andrew, William, Jeffrey, Trae, Tyler, Danielle, Michael, Steven, Nicole, Justin, Owen, Parker, Alex, Danny, Keith, Connor, Kayla, Ryan, Leah, Scarlett and Benny. She was predeceased by her brothers Aloysius “Wish” Harrietha, Ronald Harrietha and sisters Mary “Carmelita” MacDonald, Reynelda Young and Dolores Casey.

Her remains will rest at Dennis Haverstock Funeral Home in Port Hawkesbury with visitation from 4-8 p.m. on Wednesday, April 19. Funeral mass will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, April 20 at St. Mary of the Angels Church, Glendale with Rev. Barrett Clare-Johnson officiating. Burial to follow in the parish cemetery.
