Obituary of John Hazen Holmes
It is with great sorrow that we announce the passing of our Father, John Hazen Holmes at Dr. Gerald Zetter Nursing Home on February 17, 2023. Hazen was the son of Marshall and Barbara Holmes, birth Mother Martha Hubbard (Clark). He was born and raised in McKinleyville, New Brunswick.
Hazen later moved to Port Hawkesbury, Nova Scotia where he met his wife Colleen and they settled in Point Tupper and raised four children together. Years later the family would relocate to Fort McMurray, Alberta and finally Edmonton.
Dad always loved music and played many instruments, including trumpet, bagpipes, accordion and harmonica. He piped for several bands and was in a few tattoos. He also had a great voice and could often be heard singing Scottish and Irish tunes. He was a great story teller and was always ready share a tale or tell a joke, with a few of the latter being a bit off colour. He was an avid curler and ham radio operator. Hazen was as a kind person who was always willing to lend a helping hand. He will be missed by so many. Dad loved his family dearly and was loved equally in measure.
Hazen is survived by his children John “Sandy”, Donald, Barbara (Rick) and Paul, his two grandchildren Jayme and Yukina and step grandchildren Jesse (Angela) and Curtis (Phoenix), brother Elwin Hubbard (Linda) and sister Karen Bourque (Andre) and many loving nephews and nieces. Besides his parents he was predeceased by his wife Colleen, grandson Michael and brother David. A special thanks to the staff at Dr. Gerald Zetter Care Centre for the care and kindness to Dad in his last days.
Cremation has taken place and there will be no church service. Memorials to be held at a later date in Port Hawkesbury, NS and McKinleyville, NB. In lieu of flowers please make a donation to a charity of your choice.
