Brown, Elizabeth “Bessie” Gertrude

It is with heavy hearts that we, the family of Elizabeth “Bessie” Brown, age 94, of Halfway Cove, Guysborough County, announce her unexpected passing on January 24, 2023 in Timberlea. She was born in Halfway Cove, the eldest child of Clement and Bertha George, on September 24, 1928.

In her early years Bessie worked at the Lismore Lobster Factory and then at Scotia Tartan in Halifax as a fabric weaver. Following this, she became a devoted mother to her 6 children in Timberlea. An avid hockey fan, Bessie enjoyed watching and cheering on her children, grandchildren, and her favorite hockey team; the Toronto Maple Leafs. At the age of 54 she returned to Halfway Cove where she enjoyed bingo, playing cards, knitting, quilting, listening to music, talking on the phone, spending time with her sister, Marie and being chauffeured around by Dave. She especially enjoyed her weekends with family and friends at ”The Camp” and “The Beach”, where most times her quick wit and sense of humor had everyone in stitches. Bessie loved deeply, laughed loudly and never forgot to send a birthday card. Bessie is survived by her sister, Marie (Dave) Rhynold, children, Willie (Linda), Darlene (Earl), Richard (Laurie), Terry (Sandy) and Andrew (Pam), 11 grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren, Godchildren, Zelda Hendsbee, Bud Rhynold and Keigan Rhynold, niece, Anna with whom she shared a special bond and several other nieces and nephews. Bessie was predeceased by her brothers, Billy and Raymond George, cousins, Fran, Marg and Hughie George, daughter, Heather and young son, Jimmy.

Visitation will be held 2-4 and 7-9pm Monday, January 30 at St. Vincent de Paul Church, Queensport from where a funeral mass will take place on Tuesday, January 31 at 1pm. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Dennis Haverstock Funeral Home, Canso. Memorial donations can be made to St. Vincent de Paul Church or Guysborough Memorial Hospital.  Words of comfort may be forwarded to the family at www.haverstocks.com
