Obituary of Donald Kenneth MacKenzie

MacKenzie, Donald Kenneth, age 75 of Port Hawkesbury passed away peacefully on January 19, 2023, at St. Martha’s Hospital, Antigonish.

Born in Springhill, NS, he was the only child of the late Grahame and the late Ida (MacDonald) MacKenzie, Glace Bay, NS.

Ken was employed as a roll finisher at the New Page Pulp & Paper Mill in Point Tupper until his retirement. He was a sociable person with a strong work ethic who made friends easily. He was involved with the Port Hawkesbury Cubs for 20 years and was a proud auxiliary member of the RCMP for 25 years; maintaining friendships with some members until his passing.

Ken was a devoted father, a loving and caring husband and respected family man.  He enjoyed woodworking, hunting, fishing and almost any activity that involved being outdoors.  Ken was also very particular about keeping his cars “showroom ready”.  The family would jokingly comment about how his cars would last forever because of the amount of wax put on them.

Ken is survived by his wife of 52 years, Patricia (Horton), son; Scott, daughter; Allison, son in law; Brian Brunette, special daughter; Lisa MacDougall (Bert) & grandchildren; Lauren and Daniel MacDougall of Sydney, niece; Lynn Singer (Berkeley Frauzel) & nephew; Curtis (Anne) MacIntyre, Chelsea, NS, nephews; Shawn (Mary) MacIntyre of Halifax, Stephen (Janet) MacIntyre of North Carolina, sister in law; Betty Horton of Mulgrave, as well as many cousins and great nieces and nephews.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to Dr. Cooper, nurse Kyla MacKeigan and the Strait Richmond Palliative Care Society, and a heartfelt thank you to the nurses and staff of the Antigonish Palliative care for taking such wonderful care of our husband and father.

As per Ken’s wishes, cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, February 11, 2023 at 2:00 pm at St. Mark’s United Church, Port Hawkesbury. Reception and luncheon to follow at Evergreen Senior’s Club, Port Hawkesbury.
