Obituary of Theresa Elizabeth Brophy

Please share a memory of Theresa to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Brophy (Delorey), Theresa Elizabeth 87, passed away peacefully at St. Martha’s Hospital on Dec 12th, 2022. Born in Mattie Settlement on October 3rd, 1935 to the late Jerome and Margueritte (Haywood) Delorey.

"Mom" was the oldest of twelve children, raised in the beautiful countryside of Mattie Settlement.  The many stories of her childhood left no doubt of how much it meant to her to grow up with very large gardens, many farm animals, especially the horses.  She left school at a young age to work at Acadia Fisheries in Mulgrave where she was voted President of the Maritime Fisheries Union. There she met and married James, became a homemaker, and raised her four children “Around The Point”.

She was a wonderful cook and baker, turning out many loaves of homemade bread and rolls. She made delicious meals for her family. We cherish her recipes to this day, still trying to figure out the extras she would add to make everything taste so good.  Berry picking was a favorite past time in the summer.

As her children, some of our fondest memories are swimming at Clancy’s farm, Mom being a very strong swimmer, camping trips in the camper Dad built for the back of the truck, and Christmas.  Mom always made sure we had the very best Christmas possible, making it very special and full of surprises continuing to do so even in our adult years. We always looked forward to the best meat pies we have ever had every Christmas Eve.

For many years, Mom and Dad with us children in tow went to Mattie Settlement to visit “Her Bunch”, hours were spent solving and bickering over every issue they could all think of.  Many conversations going on at once, it was loud and wonderful.  Those were the good times, back in the day! We don’t think we can properly express how much her family meant to her.  She loved them all dearly.

Mom was diagnosed with Leukemia and severe arthritis in her late 60s.  She was very well cared for by "Dad" in those later years.  She spent many hours chatting on the telephone with her family. In particular, she talked and argued with her beloved brother Vince.  Vince’s passing left a very large hole in her heart that couldn’t possibly be filled. She missed him every day since. We are confident the two of them are together again, thick as thieves.

Unfortunately, Mom fell in August of 2021, breaking both feet.  She was then confined to hospitals and nursing homes.  Even though she could no longer walk she was incredibly strong-willed then and throughout her entire life.  She overcame a severe case of leukemia, crippling arthritis, broken legs, Covid, COPD and a collapsed lung.  She fought hard to overcome her illnesses and continue on with her life.

We would like to thank her siblings who visited her on a regular basis while in the nursing home, it meant a great deal to her. We would also like to acknowledge and thank the staff of the Guysborough hospital and the Port Hawkesbury nursing home for the exceptional care and warmth they so generously gave to her.  It gave us great comfort knowing she was receiving such kindness shift after shift under your care.

Mom had tremendous faith, spending countless hours praying for the well-being of others and for the souls of the departed. Mom always maintained the Lord would decide the time of her passing. He decided it would be December 12th, at 4:42 PM.  She surrendered her soul willingly and peacefully unto him.

Surviving is her loving husband James of 63 years; her four children, Ellarose (Allan) Huard, Lower South River; Dorraine (Kevin) MacEachern, Dundee; James (Tammy McKay) Digby; Debra (Ron) Chisholm, Mulgrave; Grandchildren, Warren (Julie Drisdelle), Thea (Craig Power), Nicole (Jeff MacPhee), James Michael (Courtney Cameron), Daniel (Jennifer Henley), Katie, Hunter (Kelly Horsman), Hannah (Spencer Fulton) and Jade.
