Obituary of Edward Franklyn Hayden Grant
GRANT, EDWARD FRANKLYN HAYDEN - died on Wednesday, October 19, 2022, in Guysborough Memorial Hospital with his family by his side. Born January 13, 1936, in Steep Creek, Guysborough Co., Edward "Ed" was the eldest son of the late James Lester and Vera Reide (Hayden) Grant. Known for his bear hugs, dad was a gentle giant who cherished his family dearly. He was the loving husband of the late Genevieve Dorothy (England) Grant and wonderful father to his 8 D's - Donald (Dawn), Boylston; late Darlene (Morgan Biggin), Cow Bay; Darrell (Bonnie), Boylston; Deborah (Al MacGillivray), Arisaig; Dale (Brian O'Connor), North Riverside; Denise (Jimmy Halloran), Guysborough; David (Stephanie), Steep Creek; Dwayne (Wanda), Milford.
Dad worked in the fishing industry for almost sixty years managing many fish processing plants in Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, Newfoundland, Massachusetts and New Brunswick. From ground fish to shellfish to salt fish, Dad was the go-to for fishing industry related questions even after his retirement at age 77. He believed in giving it his all and expected no less from anyone else.
Ed, PDDGM, was a proud member of the Fraternity of Freemasons and recently received his 50-year pin. He was a member of Eastern Light No. 72 - Guysborough, Stormont No. 96 - Isaac's Harbour, Canso No. 79, honourary member of Hudson No. 77 - Thorburn and a member of the Royal Arch. He enjoyed his Masonic fellowship time with his good friend Alonzo. Dad had a passion for tinkering with make and break engines and bringing them back to life with his good friend Mike. He also enjoyed time spent with his good friends Gerald and Bruce. Ed was a member of the United Church of Canada and attended Wesley United Church in Guysborough and Boylston United Church, past member of Eastern Star Guysborough and Eastern Star Mulgrave.
Along with his children, he also leaves to mourn his 21 grandchildren (Shelley, Justin, Mitchell, Adrienne, Robert, Jeremy, Natasha, Vanessa, Ashley, Matthew, Amanda, Christopher, Nicholas, Aidan, Dylan, Luke, Sarah, Katie, Courtney, Paige and Brady); 22 great-grandchildren (Brayden, Gavin, Emmerson, Jackson, Jordan, Rowan, William, Elivieve, Jerry, Sophie, Violet, Emily, Genevieve, Emmett, Natalie, Tanner, Hunter, Jase, Allie-Grace, Cody, Ali and Ashton); siblings, Sadie (Joe Jamieson), Jimmy (Shirley), Percena Fougere, Lauchie (Celeste) and Berniece Morris; brothers-in-law, Arthur, Gary, Wally, John, Greg and Joey; sisters-in-law, Verna, Shirley, Mary, Sylvia and Hazel.
Besides his parents and wife, Edward was predeceased by his eldest daughter, Darlene; paternal grandparents, maternal grandparents, parents-in-law, Russell and Cora (Hart) England; infant sister, Laura; sister-in-law, Marion Fraser as well as several aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.
The family would like to thank Dr. Ranjini and the medical staff of Guysborough Memorial Hospital for their exceptional care. Your care and compassion will not be forgotten.
At our father's request, there will be no visitation. Funeral service will be at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, October 25, 2022, from Wesley United Church, Guysborough with Deacon Alonzo Reddick officiating. A Masonic Service will be held at Boylston United Church Cemetery with burial to follow. For health reasons, the family is requesting face masks be worn for the funeral service.
