Pearl Googoo – 85 We’koqma’q First Nation Surrounded by her family Pearl Googoo passed away peacefully on October 9th, 2022 at the age of 85. Born in Sydney on May 24th, 1937 to the late Charlie Bernard & Martha Wilmot. The matriarch of our family, Pearl was our queen mother, a kind, thoughtful and generous woman, loving mother, grandmother, great & great great grandmother. She was a devoted catholic who started the annual Ste. Anne Pilgrimage from 1981-1990 along with the late Caroline Gould. She also attended the Ste. Anne Mission with her family in Maligomish where she was in well known for serving her corn beef dinner and strawberry shortcake. Pearl’s love of cooking inspired her to begin her own family catering business and hosted the most memorable Christmas feasts. Throughout the years she worked in numerous places such as Ulnoo Basket Shop, L’Arche, Subdivison Dairy, Manigo Restaurant, Rod’s Pizza & Waycobah Pizza. She received numerous awards such as the medal of bravery and elder of the year, in her prime years she was known to be the best potato picker in Maine with a record of 100 Barrels per day and received the nick name “100 Barrel Picker”. Pearl was a devoted volunteer & gifted crafter with basketry, seamstress (first sewing instructor in We’koqma’q), quilt maker, crocheting, wreath maker, & beadwork. Pearl is survived by her children Wanda Phillips, Debbie Bernard, Darlene Googoo, Dita Googoo, Doreen Googoo-Emery (Roy), Adrienne Young (William) & Jeydan Googoo, son in-laws Rod Googoo & Rod Phillips all of We’koqma’q, Aunt Regina Bernard (Millbrook), Sister in-laws Anna K Pierro (Wagmatcook), Phyllis Googoo & Betty Googoo, numerous grandchildren, foster children, godchildren Barry Bernard, Hannah Cremo, Josephine Googoo, Elizabeth Toney, (late) Glenda Googoo. Numerous friends and good friend Lo’li Gould. She was predeceased by her husband Gabriel A. Googoo, Son Charles (Mick) Googoo, stepfather Michael Wilmot, brothers Noel J Bernard & Peter Wilmot, Sister Janet Gould, Grandchildren Darrell Googoo, Mellissa Googoo-Marshall, Michael Phillips, and Great granddaughter Sophia Phillips. Visitation will begin Thursday, October 13th at 4 p.m., at the We’koqma’q Community Centre, 15 Reservation Rd., We’koqma’q First Nation. Funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, October 15, at the St. Kateri Parish Holy Trinity Church, We’koqma’q First Nation with Father Joby Augustin officiating. Burial to follow at a later date. Special Thanks to We’koqma’q Health Center Home-care Staff, Nurses Lisa & Robyn and the Palliative Care Unit Nurses at the Inverness Consolidated Memorial Hospital.
