Merle Lambert Nauffts
May 22,1932 - October 9,2022
Merle Nauffts of Hazel Hill, Canso NS, died peacefully on Sunday, October 9th, 2022 at Shoreham Village in Chester, NS. Merle loved to be surrounded by family and friends. He was quick to joke and laugh or strike up a conversation with a stranger. His smile was contagious and his friendly, gentle nature made him a friend to many. He was always game for a party or a few games of cards...and he always played to win! An avid fan of the Toronto Maple Leaf’s and the Toronto Blue Jays, Merle could be found in front of the TV during their games coaching them through the season.
Merle had an interesting and varied work history. He started work at a young age, helping with the family business, Elite Carnival Shows. Merle travelled around showing motion pictures in rural communities in Nova Scotia. In 1973 his family purchased Ideal Theater in Canso, NS and he worked there as a projectionist. Later Merle worked for Commercial Cable in Hazel Hill until his position was relocated to a different province. Instead of uprooting his family, Merle joined the family business yet again. Nauffts Radio and Television Repair kept him busy for many years. In later years, as the business slowed, Merle took a brief position at the local fish plant before retiring. Even after retirement Merle would have many repair projects in his workshop to keep himself busy.
Merle loved his family above all else. His children and grandchildren were his pride and joy. Merle is survived by his four sons; John (Karen) Fredericton, NB; Robert (Donna) Dartmouth, NS; Paul (Jill), Lower Sackville, NS; Christopher (Kristen) Timberlea, NS. His five grandchildren, Gage, Nathan, Cassie, Rylee and Megan. He is also survived by his four siblings, Helen (Ray), Hubbards, NS; Vernon (Verlie), Ottawa ON; Rose (Alphonse), Dartmouth, NS; and Ronald (Debbie), Bedford, NS. Merle is predeceased by his mother, Lydia "Mae" Nauffts, his father, Douglas Lambert Nauffts, and his loving wife, Shirley Mae.
The family would like to express gratitude to the staff at Shoreham Village in Chester, NS for their care of Merle. In particular, the recreation staff who always went above and beyond to make sure he felt happy, safe and cared for in the kindest of ways.
No visitation by request; funeral and burial services will be held at All Saints Anglican Church in Canso, 2 p.m. on Monday, October17th with Rev. Susan Slater officiating. Reception to follow in the church hall. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Merle's memory to All Saints Anglican Church or to a charity of your choosing.
