Emily Rose (Yates) MacDonald
June 7, 1937 - Oct 10, 2022
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Emily Rose (Yates) MacDonald - our mother, mother-in-law, grandmother and great grandmother. Emily passed away peacefully on Monday, October 10, 2022, in St Martha’s Regional Hospital, Antigonish at the age of 85. Born in Glace Bay, Nova Scotia, she was the daughter of the late George and Vergenia Maud Yates.
Emily’s family was the light of her life. She is survived by her three children, Brian (Joan), Port Hawkesbury; Anne Marie, Toronto; Lillian (Steve Berry), Creignish, and son -in-law Yvon Foley, Gatineau. She was an extremely proud Nannie to her five grandsons, Craig MacDonald (Michelle) Halifax, David MacDonald, Halifax and Andrew MacDonald, Port Hawkesbury, Alex Berry, Calgary, and Neal Berry, Chamcook NB, as well as two great-grandsons, Kaleb and Benjamin MacDonald. Besides her parents, Emily was predeceased by her husband of 37 years, Alexander “Alex” J. MacDonald in 1992, her daughter, Patricia in 2022 and sisters, Betty MacDougall, Molly Milley, Shirley Johnston, and Ellen Morrison and brother, Joseph at infancy.
Emily married the love of her life, Alex in 1955 and they moved to Port Hawkesbury in 1961 with their young family. She was very fortunate to have lived a long and active life. She was fond of fishing, gardening, travel, and spending summers at her beloved cottage in Colindale. Emily was incredibly talented at fabric art including sewing, quilting, needlepoint, upholstering and weaving which she enjoyed until her final days. Family and friends received countless gifts of her beautiful handmade creations that were admired and cherished by all.
Over the years Emily enjoyed participating in various community groups including the Port Hawkesbury Evergreen Club, the Glendale Weavers, Orangedale Weavers and she was an avid bridge player.
Emily was known for her zest for life and good sense of humor. She will be missed by all who knew and loved her.
