Avery, 'Thelma' Mary - Age 88, of Canso, Guysborough Co., passed away on Monday, July 28, 2014 in Eastern Memorial Hospital, Canso. Born in Antigonish, she was a daughter of the late Percy and Cora (Gurney) Hurst.
Thelma worked at Simpson’s in Halifax during World War II. She also worked at the old and new hospitals in Canso, as a cook and on the floors. Thelma was known for her crafts and her homemade quilts. She was a member of the Shamrock Club and a former member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 46, Canso. She is survived by her sons, James (Linda), Newmarket, Ont.; Wayne (Lucy) , Canso; Barry (Corine), Lower Sackville; daughter, Deborah (Kevin) Avery-McAloon, Canso; sisters, Jean Hurst, Halifax; Frances Jackson and Bertha Bond both of Canso; grandchildren, Lisa, Stephen, Joshua, Eli, Jamie, Nichole; 6 great-grandchildren. Thelma was predeceased by her husband, Howard Avery; sisters, Patricia, Viola; brother, Percy "Buddy".
Visitation will be held Wednesday, July 30 from 2-9 p.m. in Dennis Haverstock Funeral Home, Canso. Funeral mass will be celebrated Thursday, July 31 at 11:00 a.m. in Star of the Sea Roman Catholic Church, Canso with Father Dan MacDonald officiating. Burial in the parish cemetery.
