Waye, Romayne – Age 91 of Port Hawkesbury. A long-time resident of Port Hawkesbury, died in R K MacDonald Nursing Home, Antigonish on Saturday, May 14, 2016. Born in Melford, Inverness County, she was the youngest daughter of the late Daniel O’Connell and Catherine (Boyle) Doyle. Romayne is the last surviving member of her immediate family. She is survived by her step-daughters, Carol Rankin and Sharon Gilmour; nieces, Jeanette Fielding, Marianne Rissesco, Helena McCay, and Margaret Lessard; nephews, Maurice Fougere, Philip Fougere, Robert Fougere, and Myles Fougere. She was predeceased by her husband, Angus Waye; sisters, Ida Fougere, Sister Irene Doyle, CSM, Marjorie MacGillivray, Frances, Helena, Sister Jean Doyle, CSM, and Ethel; brother, Myles Daniel, who died in infancy. She was also predeceased by her nephew, Dwight MacGillivray. At a young age, Romayne moved with her family from Melford to Port Hawkesbury. She graduated from Port Hawkesbury High School and the Empire Business College in Sydney. Working as a secretary in different parts of Canada, she valued her time spent with students, staff, and parents at Centennial School in Port Hawkesbury. Romayne was a life-long student obtaining university credits from several institutions and piano certification from the Royal Toronto Conservatory of Music. Romayne will be remembered by people in Port Hawkesbury for her determination to walk to places in town to get her business done, for many years until she fell ill. As a life-long learner, she took many courses, including a Gaelic class, a photography class, and a computer class. She enjoyed her computer, exchanging emails from friends and relatives, and discovering new information. She was a member of writers’ groups throughout the years and had a number of published poems. Romayne served as the Patient Services’ Chairperson of the Strait-Area Unit Canadian Cancer Society for many years. She belonged to the Port Hawkesbury Curling Club, the Evergreen Seniors Club, and the Port Hawkesbury Bowling Club. Visitation will be held on Thursday, May 19 from 10 a.m. to 12p.m. in Dennis Haverstock Funeral Home, 724 Granville Street, Port Hawkesbury. Funeral mass will be held on the same day at 2 p.m. in St. Joseph Roman Catholic Church with Father Conrad Edwards officiating. Burial in the Parish Cemetery will follow mass. Memorial donations may be made in Memory of Romayne to the Canadian Cancer Society, Strait Area Unit or to a charity of your choice.
