STANWAY (Pelley), Muriel J. – It is with great sadness that we announce her passing on Friday, February 1, 2013, in the QEII Hospital. Muriel’s loving husband of 37 years, Ken Stanway and her family were by her side. Born in Antigonish on January 16, 1953, she was the daughter of Leo Pelley and the late Marion Bourgeois (Gosbee Pelley). She was predeceased by her sister, Viola Long; nephew, Bradley Long; and her mother, Marion. Muriel is survived by her father, Leo Pelley; sister, Mabel (Mark) Corkum; brothers, Jim Silver, David, Allen (Ruth), Brian (Angie) and Melvin (Eileen). She is also survived by her nephews, Joey, Brent, Shawn, Gerard, Nathaniel and James; as well as nieces, Yvonne, Tonya, Nicole, Amanda, Clarissa, Amy, Melissa, Tasha and Holly. Muriel endeared herself to colleagues at Northwood as family. Muriel adored her dogs, Danny, Sky and Shadow. Muriel graduated from St. Francis Xavier University in 1975, (B.Sc. Home Economics). Her 30 year career with Northwood started as Director of Dietic Services with appointments as Senior Director of Clerical Services; Senior Director of Resource Management; Strategic Analyst of Performance and Development; Corporate Director of Strategic Risk. Muriel retired from Northwood on January 29, 2010. While developing her career at Northwood, Muriel also owned and operated the Joseph Howe Tea Room from 1984 – 1991. Muriel was a national charter member of the Canadian Association of Foodservice Professionals (formerly Canadian Food Service Executives Association) and a charter member of the Halifax-Dartmouth branch. She was a National Past President and had served in many executive positions with the association at both a national and local level over her many years of dedication to the association. Muriel held the highest status, Diamond level CFE (Credentialed Food Executive) designation and in 2000 she was bestowed the rare and prestigious honor of being elected a National Lifetime Member. As with all things Muriel did, she gave her heart and soul to the association. Visitation will be held from 2-4 and 7-9p.m. Thursday, February 7, in the Dennis Haverstock Funeral Home, Guysborough. Funeral mass will be held 11a.m. Friday, from St. Ann’s Roman Catholic Church, Guysborough, with Father Dan MacDonald officiating. Burial will follow in the parish cemetery. A reception and celebration of Muriel’s life will be held at the Royal Canadian Legion, Guysborough, following the funeral mass. Family flowers only. Donations in Muriel’s memory may be made to a charity of one’s choice.
