MacQuarrie,Donald Rhodes - 81, Port Hawkesbury, Passed away on Wednesday, January 31, 2007 at the Port Hawkesbury Nursing Home. Born in Barberton, Inverness Co. He was a son of the late Allan George and Katie Belle (MacDonald) MacQuarrie. He grew up between two world wars. He suffered through several major illnesses during his later life. Donald was a witty, thoughtful gentleman through the struggles which he endured with courage. He left Cape Breton in 1950 to work in Hamilton, Ontario. He first worked as a brakeman and conductor at the Stelco Steel Mill, and later earned his credentials as a natural gas pipeline inspector employed in Hamilton ON. With the natural gas pipeline as it was crossing east from the west in Hamilton. He was active in municipal and provincial politics in Hamilton and he continued to be all his life. In 1961 he and his wife, the former Julia MacAskill returned to Cape Breton. They were married in Hamilton 52 years ago. After his return to Nova Scotia he was employed with Nova Scotia Pulp Ltd. and later he worked as a carpenter. He was member of the United Brotherhood Of Carpenters and Joiners of America, and a former member of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows. He planted vegetables and flower gardens and loved to pass fruit and vegetables to neighbours and friends, and was an avid cribbage player. Donald loved music, and enjoyed listening and singing with friends. Donald is survived by his wife Julia, sons; Blaine (Laurie), Darryl (Marsha) both of Port Hawkesbury; his grandchildren; Drew, Taylor, Cailin, Colton who brought him much joy and fun. He loved to watch and listen to them display their own talents. Also surviving are several nieces and a nephew. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family. He was predeceased by his daughter Karen Lynn; brothers; Edward and Milton. Visitation will be 7-9 pm Saturday, 2-4 and 7-9 pm on Sunday in Dennis Haverstock Funeral Home, Port Hawkesbury. Funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Monday in St. Marks United Church, Port Hawkesbury. Rev. Wilfred Pelley officiating. Burial in Southbrook Cemetery at a later date. Memorial donations may be made to Strait Richmond Palliative Care Society, St. Marks United Church, or charity of your choice. Donald’s family appreciated the staff of the Richmond Villa, Port Hawkesbury Nursing Home, the Strait Richmond Palliative Care Program , Continuing Care and Dr. James Collins and Joan Skinner for their kind and thoughtful care over the years.
