POWER, Mary Elizabeth R.N. -- Port Hawkesbury, passed away peacefully on the morning of Wednesday November, 10, 2010 in Strait Richmond Hospital, Evanston. She was with her family at the time of her passing. Born in Inverness, she was a daughter of the late John Alex and Jessie Margaret (MacDonald) Gillis. Raised in Southwest Margaree, N.S., Mary went on to become a registered public health nurse. She graduated from St. Martha’s Nursing School in 1963 and completed her public health training at Dalhousie University. She worked in the Cape Breton and North Eastern Nova Scotia area for over 35 years and touched many lives with her caring, hard working hands. Mary was actively involved in her church (St. Joseph Parish, Port Hawkesbury) and community and was especially passionate about the Gaelic culture and language in Cape Breton.
She is survived by her loving husband of 43 years, Wally; eldest daughter Natalie (Tim) McDonough, Albany, N.Y., son Alan (Vicki), Port Hawkesbury, youngest daughter Coleen, Edmonton, AB.; sisters, Katherine (Tony) Musto, N.Y., Annabel Davison, New Jersey; brothers, Jerome (Barbara), Port Hood, Ron (Helen), Brampton, On., Dougie, Florida, Archie, Sarnia, On. Mary was predeceased by her brother Jim and sister Margaret Jean (Peggy).
Visitation will be7-9p.m. Thursday, with a Vigil Service at 7p.m. and 2-4 and 7-9p.m. Friday in Dennis Haverstock Funeral Home, Port Hawkesbury. Funeral mass will be 10a.m. Saturday in St. Joseph Roman Catholic Church with Father Andrew Boyd officiating. Burial in the Parish Cemetery at a later date. Family flowers only please. Memorial donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society, Kidney Foundation of Nova Scotia or a charity of your choice. Words of comfort may be forwarded to the family at: www.haverstocks.com
