Obituary
Please share a memory of Calvin to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
It is with broken hearts that we announce the passing of Donald Calvin Ross, 90, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney on Monday, November 25th, 2019 with his loving family at his side.
Calvin was born on October 4, 1929 in West Bay Marshes to the late Hughena (Oliver) and the late Colin Ross. Calvin leaves behind to mourn his loving and devoted wife of 51 years, Jeanette (Mac Donald) of West Bay Road. Together they raised four children; Tammy Kersten (Willy), Kingsville; Jody (Dina) Fort McMurray, Alberta; Kelly, West Bay Road and Lori, Antigonish. Calvin was especially proud of his grandchildren, Mikayla, Calan, Bradley, Brogan, Gracie and Sadie. He enjoyed their company immensely and loved them with all his heart. He will be greatly missed by siblings, Ronnie (Amelia) Ross, West Arichat; Hazel Schram (Herb), Simcoe, Ontario; and Ruby Mac Kay, West Bay and many loving nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by his sisters, Ethel and Betty and brothers, Palmer, David, Elmer, Jack, Jamie, Norman and George "Rock-a-Bye" Ross.
When Calvin was a young boy he developed a tubercular hip but that did not limit him in anything he set his mind to do and he seldom complained. He had several careers throughout his life. He worked in Halifax delivering milk and then with the Department of Highways driving the snowplow. He went back to school to become a welder and was a member with the Boilermakers Union who worked to helped construct the Heavy Water Treatment Plants in Glace Bay and Point Tupper. He also worked on the construction of Nova Scotia Forest Industries and shortly thereafter he became an employee where he worked in his trade as a welder until his retirement.
Calvin was stubborn but had a heart of gold and was very generous. He had an entertaining personality, quick wit and was knowledgeable on many things. He was an avid reader and enjoyed nature and the outdoors. He spent many Summers touring around with his family in the camper enjoying the scenic countryside. When not touring he could be found sitting by the water in Marble Mountain or taking in a traditional Scottish concert and enjoying a good stiff drink. Calvin was happiest when surrounded by his family and friends. He was very giving and community minded and was one of the founding members and first Fire Chief of the West Bay Road Volunteer Fire Department.
Visitation for Calvin will be from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. on Thursday November 28th in Dennis Haverstock Funeral Home, Port Hawkesbury. He will then be cremated with funeral service on Saturday, November 30th at 2 p.m. in West Bay United Church, West Bay with Lorna MacRury officiating. Burial to follow in Lime Hill Cemetery.
