Please share a memory of Elmer to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Oliver, Elmer James – 74, Halifax formerly of Point Tupper, passed away Monday, September 20, 2010 at his home Melville Lodge, Halifax.
Born in Point Tupper, July 16, 1936, he was the youngest son of the Late Elmer and Joyce (MacKinnon) Oliver. In 1963 after his Father’s death, Jim and his mother Joyce went to live with his brother Harold and his family. He remained with them until April 1988. It was at this time that Jim entered the Melville Lodge Nursing Home and it would quickly become the place he so proudly called home for the next 22 years. Jim spent the best years of his adult life there with his loving and caring family, his care workers.
Born with a brain injury, Jim faced many challenges but thanks to his mother and her love and commitment to him, Jim had a good and full life. He loved listening to the fiddle tunes on the radio when he was young, loved to go for drives in the car, would sit and watch TV especially Little Hobo for hours, and he could always be found with a pack of cards in hand ready for a game.
Jim is survived by his brother, Ralph (Yvonne), Halifax; his sister-in-law, June (the late Harold), Port Hawkesbury; his niece, Joyce Oliver-Snair (Lindsay), Port Hawkesbury, who was his guardian since his brother’s death. Jim is also survived by his nephews and nieces, Charlie, Glenna, Robbie, Rena, Karen, and Mark. Besides his parents he was predeceased by his brother Harold & baby brother Edgar.
Jim will rest in Dennis Haverstock Funeral Home in Port Hawkesbury on Wednesday Sept 22, from 2-4 and 7-9pm. Funeral service will be held Thursday, September 23, at 11am from St. Mark’s United Church, Rev. Sheldon LeGrow officiating. Burial in Southbrook Cemetery.
Memorial donations may be made to the Point Tupper Heritage Association. Words of comfort may be forwarded to the family at: www.haverstocks.com
