Malcolm, Mary Bernadette - 99, of Grantville, Richmond Co., died peacefully at home on Sunday, October 17, 2010, surrounded by her family. Born in Stellarton, Pictou Co., she was a daughter of the late Frederick and Mary (Malcolm) Hartling.
Bernadette was a homemaker and a member of St. Francis de Sales Parish, Lower River Inhabitants. Mom was a strong independent woman, a wonderful mother, grandmother, and great- grandmother. She will be missed by all. Surviving are daughter, Bernadette “Sis” (Gary) MacNeil, Port Hawkesbury; sons, John Whalen, Richmond Villa, St. Peter’s; Allie (Marilyn, Freddie “Ted” (Charlotte) , Bernie (Mary Theresa), all of Grantville; grandchildren, Lisa, Nadine, Laurie, Amanda, Kenny, Mary Anne, Shannon, Amber, Roddie, Tanya, Shauna, Shelly; great-grandchildren, Ashton, Katie, Xavier, Bria, Ayden, Cambria, M.J., Sasha, Cameron and Jadea; several nieces and nephews. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. Predeceased by first husband, Michael Whalen, second husband, Albert Malcolm; son, Norman Malcolm, sisters, Clare, Margaret Hartling; brothers, Howard, Clarence and Benvie.
Visitation will be 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Wednesday, in Dennis Haverstock Funeral Home, Port Hawkesbury. Funeral mass will be held 11 a.m. Thursday, in St. Francis de Sales Roman Catholic Church., with Father Barrett Clare-Johnson officiating. Burial in the parish cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to St. Francis de Sales Building Fund or Cemetery Fund. We would like to thank home care services and nurses for their excellent care of our mother.
