McNAMARA Mary Ellen – 101, Port Hastings/St. Peter’s, passed away early on the morning of Saturday, April 28, 2012, in the Richmond Villa, St. Peter’s, surrounded by members of her family and loving caregivers. Mary Ellen was the oldest resident of Port Hastings. Born in Judique, Inverness Co. on December 18, 1910, she was the daughter of the late Archie (the piper) and Katie (MacEachen) MacMaster. Mary Ellen inspired everyone she encountered up to the end with her generous spirit, her wit, her stories, her inimitable style and her absolute dedication to seizing the moment. She was a member of St. Joseph Parish, a former member of St. Joseph Choir and a lifetime member of St. Joseph Ladies Guild. She was also a member of the C.N. Pensioners Club. She was one of the co-founders of the Port Hastings Historical Society and past President of the Causeway Women’s Liberal Club. In her earlier years she served on the local School Board. In 2008 she took up residence at the Richmond Villa in St. Peter’s, where she made many new friends amongst the residents and staff. There she received the up-most and excellent care and became very much at home where she was loved by all. Mary Ellen always enjoyed and appreciated the company of the little children on her street. She opened her home to the Sisters of Charity back in the 50’s for religion classes. Mary Ellen is survived by her daughter, Mabel MacDonald, Port Hastings; son, Hugh and his wife Mary, of Long Point; A granddaughter of whom she was a faithful guardian since birth, Mary Annette (Bannistar) DeCoste and her husband Derrick; 13 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; 6 great-great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews and cousins. She was predeceased by her husband, George Arthur; daughter, Anne Amirault; sons-in-law, Gerald Amirault and Duncan MacDonald; grandson-in-law, Murdo Bannistar; brothers, Hughie Dan and Vincent and spouces; foster parents, Hugh and Anne MacEachen. Visitation will be held Sunday, May 6, from 7-9pm and Monday, May 7, from 2-4 and 7-9pm in Dennis Haverstock Funeral Home, Port Hawkesbury. Funeral Mass will be 10am Tuesday from St. Joseph Roman Catholic Church, Port Hawkesbury, with Father Andrew Boyd officiating. Burial will follow in Stella Maris Parish Cemetery, Creignish. In lieu of flowers. Donations may be made to the Recreation Dept. of the Richmond Villa in St. Peter’s.
