Darryl Kawaja, Port Hawkesbury, Age 75 Darryl "Dee Dee" Kawaja returned to his Creator on Thursday, June 30, 2016, in the Strait Richmond Hospital, Evanston. He was born in Mulgrave, N.S. in 1941 to John and Mary (MacDonald) Kawaja. His world was large as was his heart. You could often hear him before seeing him, a whistle or a song in the air. Darryl loved to tell stories, funny tales about the old days in Mulgrave, years working in the mill, travels overseas and good times with friends near and far. His uncle, Don MacDonald, would often prompt, "Tell the one about…" and it would send Don into fits of laughter as it got near the punch line. Darryl worked for 41 years as a paper maker at Stora. While he loved to travel, from the mountains of Nepal to the plains of Kenya, he also found adventure close to home on the slopes of Keppoch and in the waves of Cape Breton. Darryl is survived by his wife and best friend Judy. He will be deeply missed by his children: Nicole, Nancy, John, and Cheryl and 11 grandchildren as well as his siblings: Cheryl Trinca, Eileen Brow, Donald Kawaja and George Kawaja. Darryl is predeceased by his sister Myrna Kawaja and Carol Marie who died in childhood. A wake will be held from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in Dennis Haverstock Funeral Home, Port Hawkesbury on Friday July, 1. A memorial mass will be held on Saturday, July 2 at 11am in Port Hawkesbury from St. Joseph Catholic Church. Special thanks to the staff at Strait Richmond hospital, including the palliative team, who showed Darryl and his family such care and attention over the last few months as well as the home-care staff.
