Obituary
Please share a memory of Melvin to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the death of our husband, father, grandfather, brother, teacher and friend, Melvin "Maritimer" Morris, 59, of Mulgrave; which occurred on Wednesday, June 15, 2011 in St. Martha’s Regional Hospital, Antigonish. Born in Antigonish, he was the son of the late Henry and Jane (Somers) Morris, Sand Point.
As a young man, Melvin decided to follow his dream and bought an eighteen wheeler, and then set about to learn how to drive it. It wasn’t long before he mastered the art of driving a tractor trailer, and from then on there was nothing Melvin sat in that he couldn’t operate. His natural skills and abilities took him all over Canada and down into the U.S. many times hauling specialized loads that required the calibre of driver that Melvin was. Melvin was in his glory rolling down the highway, hammer down and the tunes a’playin. In later years, Melvin studied for and received his lift ticket, an accomplishment he worked hard for and was very proud of. Melvin was a Master Mason and a member of Temple Lodge #57, Mulgrave, and a former member of the Mulgrave Volunteer Fire Dept. He was also a founding member of the Seven Communities Volunteer Fire Dept. Melvin’s many years with these departments earned him the Long Service Medal, an honour he cherished.
Melvin is survived by his wife and friend, Berniece, sons, Aaron (Yvette) and Nathan (Robyn) all of Port Hawkesbury; and Nick (Jen), of St. Andrews; grandchildren, Landon, Reagan, Coleson and Brody; sisters, Geraldine (Bill) Chisholm, Hamilton, Ont; Louessa Grady (Ron Veno), Onslow Mountain; Janet, Cochrane, AB; brothers, Raymond (Ruth), Sand Point; Ernie (Rhena), Fort McMurray, AB; as well as many nieces and nephews. Melvin also leaves behind his most constant and loyal companion, his little Sugar Bear.
Visitation for Melvin will be 2-9p.m. Monday, June 20, in Mulgrave and Area Resting Place. Masonic Service will be held at 6:45p.m. also in the Mulgrave and Area Resting Place. Funeral Service will be 11a.m. Tuesday June 21, from St. Andrew’s Anglican Church, Mulgrave, with Rev. Evelyn Knorr officiating. Burial will be in St. James Cemetery, Middle Melford. Family flowers only please. Donations in Melvin’s memory may be made to the Asthma Foundation of Nova Scotia. Funeral arrangements for Melvin are under the care and direction of the Dennis Haverstock Funeral Home, Port Hawkesbury. Words of comfort may be forwarded to the family at www.haverstocks.com
