Obituary
Please share a memory of Rebecca to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
MORRISON, Rebecca "Becky" (Gillis) - 94, Whycocomagh, passed away quietly at her second home, the Victoria County Memorial Hospital, Baddeck, on Wednesday November 30, 2011 with her beloved daughter Neila by her side. Becky was the last surviving child of John Archie and Nellie (MacDonald) Gillis. She will be greatly missed as the family matriarch, with her strong will and dry wit, along with being a family and community historian. Becky’s view from her window over Whycocomagh gave her a great deal of pleasure and kept her connected to the community.
She lost her husband, Elvin, of 57 years, 22 years ago this week. Becky’s two children were the center of her universe. She was predeceased by her son, Jackie, who filled her life with laughter, cards, and a constant love of food. Surviving are her daughter, Neila, and her son-in-law, Joseph Gerrior, who kept her connected to the world outside with their travels, adventures, and their boys in "Boston". Joe and Neila were "the couple" who came to take care of "Mama", over the roads and over the years. Becky will also be greatly missed by her grandchildren Brian Gerrior(Karen), Glenn Gerrior(Jeananne), Peter Gerrior(Carole), Stewart Morrison, Ivan Morrison (Joyce), and Jill Morrison, along with great grandchildren Kristina, Brian, Danielle, Rebecca, Joe, Dylan, Devin, Jade, and Emily. Becky was born on September 19, 1917, in Skye Glen, but grew up in and loved the Big Brook area. She shared wonderful memories of her family life there with her siblings- Isabel (MacLeod, MacLean), Sadie (Robertson), Kay(MacPhail), Malcolm, and Bunny(MacLennan). Becky is survived by numerous nieces and nephews, grand nieces and nephews, and great-grand nieces and nephews who enjoyed visiting at Becky’s, rolling on her floor, playing with her toys, and just talking to her, because she not only could tell a good story but she was a great listener as well.
Special thanks go to Dr. Chow and the nurses of Victoria County Memorial Hospital for their support and care through many painful times. Becky would not have been able to stay in her home until last week without the wonderful home care support workers and nurses, who not only cared for her but treated her like family.
Donations in memory of Becky may be made to St.Andrew’s Presbyterian Church or the Stewartdale Cemetery Fund, Whycocomagh. Arrangements are under the loving care of Becky’s friend John Langley at Dennis Haverstock Funeral Home, Port Hawkesbury.
Becky’s life will be celebrated with a wake from 2-9 pm on Saturday, Dec. 3 in Dennis Haverstock Funeral Chapel in Whycocomagh, and her funeral will be held at St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, Whycocomagh at 2 pm Sunday, Dec. 4th with Reverend Andrew MacDonald officiating. Burial in Stewartdale Cemetery. Words of comfort may be forwarded to the family at www.haverstocks.com
