MacNeil, Frederick D. "Freddie"- Louisdale. It is with very heavy hearts that we announce the peaceful passing of a loving husband, father, son, brother, uncle, brother-in-law and friend at the young age of 49 after a brief but courageous battle. He was surrounded by his loving family and devoted wife, Wanda who provided unconditional loving care, never leaving his side. Fred was a strong presence in all his family’s lives but especially proud of his two sons’ and loved nothing more than sharing news of their sporting accomplishments or special interests. Although his first love was his family, his community, hunting, hockey, baseball and cooking played a large part in his life. What wonderful memories family and friends have of times gathered around the kitchen table enjoying the meals he prepared. He had a wicked sense of humour whose mischievous nature made it a joy to be in his company. Fred was a member of Local 1115 Labourers Union and was employed in the construction and concrete industries. He previously worked with many companies including Joneljim and more recently Norvon Enterprises Ltd. Fred loved his work taking pride in every project he took on. Active in the Sporting Community, Fred was Past–President of Minor Hockey where he received an award of Merit in 2004. He was an executive member of the NewPage Hockey Tournament and coached hockey for several years in the Strait Richmond Minor Hockey Association. He received the Municipality of the County of Richmond Volunteer Award for Minor Hockey and also served on the Arena Board for the Richmond Arena. Fred spent 15 years officiating with Hockey Nova Scotia which he was rewarded by a trip to the Canada Games in 1987. One of Fred’s other passions was baseball where he coached at the Minor Level. He played for several years in the RABA as well as with the Louisdale Blues slow pitch which toured the Province with many victories. He will be deeply missed by his loving wife of 25 years, Wanda (Martell), his sons, Jeremy and Jared, both of Louisdale; loving parents Patsy (and the late Malcolm) MacNeil, Port Hawkesbury; sister, Mary (Joe) MacDonnell, Port Hawkesbury; nephew, Chad (Candice), Halifax; brother, Stan (Tracy) MacNeil, Port Hawkesbury; nephews, Keanan and Brady, father and mother-in-law, Joe and Muriel Martell, Louisdale; brother-in-law, Gerard (Madelyn) Martell, Scarborough, Ont.; niece, Marisa, as well as aunts and uncles. He was predeceased by his grandparents, Fred and Annabelle Burke; grandparents, Jack and Lida MacNeil; grandparents-in-law Arthur and Rose Marchand and special uncle, Dan Willie MacDonald.
