Obituary
Please share a memory of Florence to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
MACINNIS, Florence Isobel – 90, formerly of Port Hawkesbury, recently of Halifax, died peacefully on Wednesday, April 17, 2013 at the Victoria General Hospital.
She was a daughter of the late James Vincent and Annie (Bibby) Irwin. She will be sorely missed, and fondly remembered, by her loving sons, Irwin and David; daughter-in-law, Lauren; sister, Mabel; brother, Harold (Rita); grandson, Mark; great-grandchildren, Michael, Caleb, Samuel and Ruth; niece, May; and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her beloved husband, Hugh Gillis; brothers, Jimmie, Roger, John, Joe and George; and sisters, Jane, Annie, Margaret and Jean.
Florence was born in Londonderry, Northern Ireland in 1922. During World War II, she worked as an inspector in aircraft manufacturing plants in Northern Ireland and England. She and Hugh met in Birmingham, where Florence was working at the time and Hugh was on leave from the front. In 1947, Florence immigrated to Canada as a war bride, arriving at Pier 21 in Halifax on St. Patrick’s Day. Together, the couple owned and operated trucking and home-heating fuel delivery businesses, with Florence managing the financial aspects of the businesses. They were passionate gardeners and took great pleasure working in their flower and vegetable gardens. While not a sports fan, Florence became particularly knowledgeable about hockey given that it was her beloved husband’s greatest sporting interest.
At Florence’s request, there will be no visitation. A memorial service will be held in Dennis Haverstock Funeral Home, 724 Granville St., Port Hawkesbury, on Tuesday, April 23, at 2:00 p.m., with Father Andrew Boyd as celebrant. Internment will take place in St. Joseph Parish Cemetery following the service.
