Please share a memory of Roy to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Roy MacKenzie -Whycocomagh. It is with heavy hearts that the family of Roy Harvey MacKenzie announce his passing on April 30, 2013 at the Victoria County Memorial Hospital, following a 12 year struggle with cancer. Born on April 9, 1924 in River Denys, Roy's career in the Royal Canadian Signals of the Armed Forces took him to many places but nowhere did his heart feel more at home and at peace than while fishing on the river banks of River Denys.
He retired to Whycocomagh in 1975 where he started a second career as a handyman, working on many community projects while enjoying thcomradeship of local carpenters. Roy had served with the British Columbia Regiment of Canada while in active duty during WW2. He was very proud to have received the "Medal of Remembrance in relation to the Liberation of Holland" in 2002.
Through to his final days, Roy cherished his independence and strong determination, values he learned throughout his military career between 1943-74 and also by following the example set by his caring mother, Cassie MacIntosh. His work ethic was reflected in his community spirit, being particularly proud of busy years served with the Whycocomagh Lions and the lasting bonds he made during that period of his life. He was also a member of Stewart United Church, Royal Canadian Legion Branch 123, and other volunteer groups.
Roy also cherished those simpler moments, whether sharing stories with his grandchildren or being behind the wheel with "Shoupie" by his side and the fiddle tunes playing. Roy leaves behind to mourn his beloved wife, Marguerite, son Glenn (Mary Ann) MacKenzie, son Gary (Geraldine) MacKenzie, daughter Terry (Craig) Gillis, daughter Carole (John) Munro, sisters Anna (Billy) MacKinnon and Mae (Nelson) Poole, brother Gussie MacIntosh, special cousin Kaye (Johnny) Forand, sister-in-law Terry (Vernon) Walsh, grandchildren Lindsey, Jonathan, Sean, Devon, Matthew, Jason, Meaghan, Blake, Christy, Garrett, and Callie, his adored great grandchildren, and nieces and nephews.
The family would like to express their gratitude to the staff of the Victoria County Memorial Hospital for their wonderful care throughout his illness. There will be no visitation in honour of Roy 's wishes. A memorial funeral service will be held on Saturday, May 4th at 11:00am at the Stewart United Church, officiated by Reverend Donna Tourneur. Burial to follow at the Stewartdale Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Whycocomagh Lions or to the renovation project of the Legion via the Whycocomagh Waterfront Centre Association, both of which held such special meaning for Roy. Words of comfortmay be forwarded to the family at:www.haverstocks.com
