MacAskill, Donald John "Allister" - 78, Auld’s Cove, Guysborough Co., passed away on Saturday, September 21, 2013 in St. Martha’s Regional Hospital, Antigonish. Born in Mulgrave, January 5, 1935 to Daniel Malcolm and Jean (Brophy) MacAskill. Allister was proud to have been a construction worker in the building of the Canso Causeway and he was employed with the Town of Port Hawkesbury for 27 years. Allister was a great story teller and great historian, he was a 3rd generation lobster fisherman, having started to fish at a very young age. He was proud to have passed his knowledge of lobster fishing along to his two sons. He was a charter member of the Auld’s Cove Fire Department and a devoted member of St. Lawrence Parish, Mulgrave. Survived by loving wife of 54 years, Mary B. (Rogers); children, Donnie (Jane Doucette), Port Hawkesbury; Rose Marie Richardson, Canso/Port Hawkesbury; Emily (Rand) Hartley, Mulgrave; Allen (Phyllis) MacAskill, Havre Boucher and Cathy, Port Hawkesbury; grandchildren, Hailey and Jeffrey Richardson; Malcolm, Gillis, Allison and Leland MacAskill, he is also survived by brothers, Bernard (Barbara), Auld’s Cove; Anthony (Una), Bedford and sister, Carol Jenkins, Dartmouth; Mother-in-law Emily Cohoon, Port Hawkesbury Nursing Home, many nieces and nephews. Allister was predeceased by his parents Dan and Jean, sisters, Anne McCaffrey, Mary in infancy and son-in-law Perry "Spook" Richardson. Visitation will be held 2-4 and 6-9 on Tuesday, in Mulgrave and Area Resting Place. Funeral mass will be held 11a.m. Wednesday, in St. Lawrence Roman Catholic Church, Mulgrave, with Father Allan MacPhie officiating. Burial in the parish cemetery. Special thank you to the doctors and nurses in ICU, PCU and GARU at St. Martha’s Hospital, Antigonish. Donations can be made to Port Hawkesbury Food Bank, St. Lawrence Parish or a charity of your choice. Funeral arrangements are under the care and direction of Dennis Haverstock Funeral Home, Port Hawkesbury.
